Inca Trail Availability 2026 & 2027: Check Permits and Book Your Trek

October 6, 2026
Tabla de contenidos

Inca Trail availability for 2026 and 2027 is one of the first things you should check when planning a trek to Machu Picchu. Access to the Inca Trail network is regulated, which means departure dates cannot be treated like a conventional day tour that you simply book after arriving in Cusco.

Available spaces depend on the route, the selected date and the capacity authorized for each itinerary. Part of the daily capacity is also used by guides, porters and other staff involved in trekking operations, so the total number of authorized entries should not be interpreted as the number of tourist permits available for one specific route.

At Dreamy Tours, we recommend checking availability first and confirming your trek before arranging hotels, domestic flights and other activities around Cusco. If your priority is the complete experience, you can review the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days. If you have less time, the Short Inca Trail 2 Days offers a shorter regulated route toward Machu Picchu.

Inca Trail Availability 2026 and 2027: Check Spaces and Plan Your Trek

Is the Inca Trail available in 2026?

Yes. Entry sales for the Inca Trail network for the 2026 season officially opened in November 2025. For travelers planning a trek during 2026, the key question is no longer whether reservations have opened, but which departure dates and routes still have spaces available.

Availability changes as bookings are confirmed. A date that still has spaces today may become limited later, particularly during periods of higher demand.

If hiking the Inca Trail is one of the main reasons for your trip to Peru, it is better to confirm the trekking date before building the rest of your itinerary around Cusco.

Are Inca Trail spaces for 2027 already available?

At this stage, travelers should be careful with information about 2027.

Planning for 2027 is possible, but availability should not be presented as officially open until the corresponding Peruvian authorities publish the schedule and booking conditions for that season.

This distinction is important. You can already decide approximately when you would like to travel, choose between the Classic and Short Inca Trail routes and prepare your travel information. However, the departure itself should only be considered confirmed once the official system allows the corresponding booking.

For this reason, Dreamy Tours does not treat estimated 2027 availability as guaranteed space.

How does Inca Trail availability currently work?

Availability is connected to the official booking system for the Inca Trail network.

In 2026, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture introduced an updated direct-sale mechanism based on confirmed payment. Under this system, spaces are not meant to remain blocked indefinitely by unpaid reservations. Once the purchase is completed and payment is confirmed, the corresponding ticket is assigned to the visitor.

If the payment is not completed within the permitted period, the space can return to the system and become available again.

For the Inca Trail network, travel agencies and tourism operators continue to play an important role because booking the trek involves more than simply obtaining an entry ticket. Guiding, transportation, logistics, food and, on the Classic route, multi-day camping operations all need to be coordinated.

How many Inca Trail spaces are available each day?

The wider Inca Trail network operates with a regulated daily capacity, but this figure requires context.

The total capacity does not represent tourist spaces for the Classic Inca Trail alone. It also includes different routes and the personnel required to operate trekking groups, such as guides and porters.

For travelers, the most useful number is therefore not the overall capacity of the entire network. What matters is the number of spaces still available for the specific route and date you want to book.

AspectWhat it means
Is daily access limited?Yes
Are all spaces exclusively for tourists? No
Is there only one Inca Trail route? No
Do all routes have the same capacity? No
Can availability change by date?Yes
Should you confirm a specific departure date?Yes

This is why we recommend checking actual availability instead of relying on a general statement such as “there are hundreds of permits every day.”

Which Inca Trail routes can travelers book?

The Inca road network around Machu Picchu includes different authorized routes and access points. For international travelers, the two best-known options are the Classic Inca Trail and the Short Inca Trail.

The Classic Inca Trail route traditionally begins around Km 82 at Piscacucho. Over several days, hikers cross mountain passes, archaeological sites and different ecosystems before reaching Wiñay Wayna, Inti Punku and Machu Picchu.

The Short Inca Trail 2 Days begins around Km 104 and follows a shorter regulated section through Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna and Inti Punku before reaching Machu Picchu.

Both are part of the protected Inca Trail system, but their availability must be checked separately.

Classic Inca Trail 4 Days availability

The Classic Inca Trail 4 Days is the traditional multi-day route and is generally one of the most requested trekking experiences in Cusco.

The journey begins around Km 82 and continues through archaeological sites, campsites, mountain passes and sections of original Inca road before reaching Inti Punku and Machu Picchu.

Because access is limited, popular departure dates can sell out in advance. This is particularly important for travelers with fixed itineraries or limited time in Cusco.

If your schedule cannot easily be moved, confirming the trekking date early gives you more freedom when planning hotels, transportation and other tours around it.

You can understand the complete itinerary in our guide to the Classic Inca Trail route.

Short Inca Trail 2 Days availability

The Short Inca Trail 2 Days uses a different access point and follows the route through Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna and Inti Punku before reaching Machu Picchu.

Because it is a different regulated route, its availability should not be assumed from the Classic Inca Trail.

A date may have spaces on the Short Inca Trail even when the Classic route is unavailable, or the opposite may occur.

For this reason, travelers who cannot find availability on the four-day trek should check the two-day option before giving up on the idea of hiking part of the historic Inca Trail network.

The Short Inca Trail should not be understood as simply using “leftover permits” from the Classic route. They are different regulated access options and must be checked independently.

When does Inca Trail availability sell out fastest?

There is no single date when every departure suddenly becomes unavailable.

Demand changes according to the month, specific travel dates and the number of confirmed bookings. Drier months in Cusco generally attract more travelers, but that does not mean every date sells out at the same speed or that availability is guaranteed during other parts of the year.

For that reason, it is more useful to work with real-time availability than with rigid assumptions.

If you are still deciding when to travel, our guide to the best time to hike the Inca Trail can help you compare the seasons before choosing your dates.

How far in advance should you book?

If your dates are fixed and hiking the Inca Trail is a priority, it is sensible to begin planning several months ahead.

This is not because there is an official rule saying that every traveler must book exactly two or three months in advance. The reason is much simpler: once a departure date is full, you cannot solve the problem by arriving earlier at the checkpoint.

Booking earlier also makes it easier to organize acclimatization days, hotels, other excursions and onward transportation.

A practical way to think about the process is to separate two questions:

When do I want to travel?

and

Which dates are actually still available?

The second question should determine the final departure date.

How can you check if spaces are still available?

Availability needs to be checked for a specific route and departure date.

When you contact Dreamy Tours, the most useful information is your approximate starting date, number of travelers and preferred trekking option. If you have flexibility of one or two days, mentioning it can also help identify alternatives.

Once those details are clear, the corresponding route can be checked before you proceed with the rest of the reservation.

If you are still deciding how long you want to trek, you can also read how many days you need for the Inca Trail before choosing a route.

What information do you need to check availability?

For an initial availability request, you do not need to have every part of your Peru trip finalized.

It is useful to provide:

  • Approximate starting date.
  • Number of travelers.
  • Preferred Inca Trail route.
  • Alternative dates, if you have flexibility.
  • Nationality.
  • Ages when relevant for fare categories.

Once you decide to book, your travel document information will need to be entered correctly because Inca Trail access is linked to the identity of the traveler.

For a more detailed explanation, read our guide to Inca Trail permits.

What happens if your preferred date is sold out?

The first step is to check nearby dates.

If you have not yet purchased non-refundable flights or fixed all your hotel reservations, moving the trek by one or two days may give you additional options.

The second possibility is to check another Inca Trail route. If the Classic Inca Trail is full, the Short Inca Trail may still have its own availability.

You can also consider alternative treks around Cusco, such as Salkantay, Lares or Choquequirao, although these provide different experiences and should not be treated as identical substitutes for the Inca Trail.

If you are exploring other options, continue with our guide to Inca Trail alternatives.

Is the Inca Trail open all year?

No.

The Inca Trail network closes during February for annual conservation and maintenance work.

During this period, work can be carried out on trails, campsites, signs, infrastructure and other sections of the protected area.

This annual closure is part of the conservation strategy for the route and means that travelers planning a February trip need to consider another trekking option.

In addition to the scheduled February closure, temporary suspensions can also occur at other times if safety conditions require them.

Can availability change because of weather or temporary closures?

Yes.

A confirmed space and an operational trail are related, but they are not exactly the same thing.

Heavy rain, landslides, damage to infrastructure or other safety concerns can occasionally lead authorities to temporarily restrict access while inspections or maintenance work are completed.

This happened during 2026, when some Inca Trail routes required temporary closures and rehabilitation work after periods of intense rainfall.

For travelers, this is a reminder that checking availability is only one part of preparation. Before beginning the trek, it is also important to follow official updates and instructions from your tour operator.

Does Inca Trail availability include Machu Picchu entry?

The Inca Trail trek and the visit to Machu Picchu are coordinated as part of the travel experience, but you should not assume that any available Machu Picchu ticket automatically means there is also space on the Inca Trail.

The Inca Trail network has its own regulated routes, access points and booking controls.

When comparing tours, review exactly which entrances and services are included in the specific program you are considering.

You can check the current details on the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days and Short Inca Trail 2 Days pages.

Should you book the Inca Trail before your hotels?

If hiking the Inca Trail is one of the main priorities of your trip, we recommend confirming the trekking date first.

Once the departure is secured, you can organize nights in Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and other destinations around it.

A practical planning order is:

StepWhat to organize
1Choose an approximate travel period
2Check Inca Trail availability
3Confirm the route and departure date
4Allow time for acclimatization
5Arrange hotels and other tours
6Finalize domestic flights and transfers

This sequence reduces the risk of building your entire itinerary around a trekking date that is no longer available.

How many days should you spend in Cusco before the trek?

We do not recommend arriving in Cusco the evening before beginning a multi-day trek.

The Classic Inca Trail reaches significant elevations, and giving your body time to adapt is especially important if you are arriving from a low-altitude destination.

Having a few days before the trek also gives you time to explore Cusco or the Sacred Valley without rushing directly into several days of hiking.

You can learn more in our guides to altitude sickness on the Inca Trail and Inca Trail altitude.

Which route should you choose if both are available?

If both the Classic and Short Inca Trail have availability, the decision should be based on the experience you want rather than simply choosing whichever route has more spaces.

The Classic Inca Trail offers several full days of trekking, campsites, mountain passes and multiple archaeological sites.

The Short Inca Trail concentrates the experience into a shorter itinerary and avoids some of the highest mountain passes of the Classic route.

Inca Trail availability 2026 and 2027: how to plan correctly

Inca Trail availability should be one of the first things you review if you want to reach Machu Picchu by following this historic trekking route.

For 2026, reservations are already operating, so the practical task is to check which routes and dates still have spaces available.

For 2027, the approach should be different. You can begin planning your preferred travel period and decide which route interests you, but official availability should not be treated as confirmed until the corresponding Peruvian authorities release the booking schedule for the new season.

Once you find a date that fits your trip, the next step is to choose between the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days and the Short Inca Trail 2 Days, confirm the departure and organize the rest of your Peru itinerary around that reservation.
