    Red Rocks, Altiplano Lagoons and Chaxa Lagoon

    Discover some of the most spectacular landscapes of northern Chile on a Red Rocks and Altiplano Lagoons full-day tour from San Pedro de Atacama. This experience combines high-altitude lagoons, volcanic scenery, traditional Andean villages and the wildlife of the Atacama Salt Flats.

    Explore the Miscanti and Miñiques Lagoons, the Red Rocks Viewpoint and Tuyajto Lagoon, surrounded by volcanoes, multicolored mountains and the vast landscapes of the Altiplano. You will also visit Socaire, a traditional village known for its agricultural terraces and Andean-style church.

    The tour continues to Chaxa Lagoon, one of the best places for flamingo watching in the Atacama Desert and a remarkable setting within the Atacama Salt Flats.

    Note: pickup is included only within the urban area of San Pedro de Atacama.

    During this journey, we will head southeast and visit the charming highland town of Socaire. From a viewpoint, we will have the opportunity to admire its beautiful church and learn more about its traditional agriculture.

    Continuing our adventure, we will venture into the Altiplano and reach the mesmerizing Miscanti and Meñiques Lagoons. Here, we will take a walk between both lagoons, immersing ourselves in the impressive flora and fauna of the area. As we continue through the high puna, we will arrive at the Aguas Calientes sector, where a captivating landscape awaits us. The surrounding hills display a magnificent range of colors, creating a truly unique and breathtaking view.

    This area is widely known as the “Red Rocks Viewpoint” due to its dominant reddish-brown tones. Continuing a few kilometers further, we will reach the final viewpoint at the stunning Tuyajto Lagoon. On the way back, we will stop in the town of Socaire, famous for its terraced crops and its beautiful Andean-style church.

    Later, we will enter the Atacama Salt Flat, specifically Laguna Chaxa, where we can observe a variety of birds and pink flamingos while enjoying one of the most impressive sunsets in the Altiplano.

The maximum altitude reached is 4,200 m. For proper acclimatization, we recommend eating light meals and drinking plenty of water in the days prior to the excursion. Due to the altitude, we suggest leaving this activity for the end of your stay in San Pedro de Atacama.

The Altiplanic Lagoons (Miscanti and Miñiques) are located in the Andean Altiplano, surrounded by volcanoes and mountains. These lagoons are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, where the combination of water color, volcanoes, and ice formed by low temperatures creates stunning landscapes.

This excursion is available every day of the year, except on January 1st and December 25th.

No, the lagoons visited during this tour are not suitable for swimming.
