Moon Valley is located just 10 km west of San Pedro de Atacama. It is an impressive destination that offers a wide variety of outstanding attractions. This area was declared a natural sanctuary in 1982 and is part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, within the Salt Mountain Range.

Moon Valley features remarkable geological formations such as ridges with peaks, hollows, and hills of grey and ochre tones. These characteristics contribute to its unique lunar appearance, which is especially striking during the tour. FAQ

FAQ

Shortly after departure, in just five minutes, the landscape began to amaze us. The vast mountains were painted in ochre, red, and yellow tones, while the white color of the minerals—mainly sodium chloride or “salt”—enhanced the scenery. The clear blue sky and a few scattered clouds completed the impressive view.

In Death Valley, unlike Moon Valley, which we will talk about shortly, various activities can be practiced, such as sandboarding, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

In the surrounding area, evaporites were abundant—sedimentary rocks formed when salts dissolve in lakes and coastal seas and then crystallize. The reserve had clearly marked trails for tourists, with stones and signage. We noticed a sign warning visitors not to enter the “evaporite sector” in order to protect these unique formations from human interference.
