Pick-up and Tour Start
We begin the Rainbow Mountain tour with pick-up from hotels in Cusco’s historic center. Our guide will welcome you to start this adventure to the Cusco Rainbow Mountain, one of the most photographed 7 Colors destinations in Peru.
Cusco – Cusipata Journey
We start a scenic 2-hour drive south, passing through spectacular Andean landscapes until reaching Cusipata (3,310 m.a.s.l.). Along the way, we will witness sunrise over the snow-capped peaks as we gradually approach the Rainbow Mountain region.
Energy Breakfast in Cusipata
We enjoy a traditional Andean breakfast that provides the energy needed for the high-altitude hike to the Mountain of Seven Colors. This is also an important moment for acclimatization before continuing to higher altitude.
Cusipata – Phulawasipata Transfer
We continue ascending for another hour to Phulawasipata (4,200 m.a.s.l.), the base camp and starting point of the hike to Vinicunca. Along this section, we begin to see the first colorful mountains in the distance.
Hike to Rainbow Mountain
We begin the most exciting part of the tour: a 1.5 to 2-hour hike (depending on physical condition) to Rainbow Mountain. During this high-altitude trek, we ascend about 1,000 meters through:
Landscapes along the way:
- Red Valley with unique geological formations
- Andean grasslands where llamas and alpacas graze
- Panoramic views of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain (6,372 m.a.s.l.)
- High-altitude puna flora
- Local camelid herder communities
Summit Experience – Rainbow Mountain
We reach the summit of Rainbow Mountain at 5,200 m.a.s.l., one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the world.
At the summit:
- Panoramic photos of Rainbow Mountain
- Observation of natural mineral-colored stripes
- Views of the Red Valley and surrounding peaks
- Optional gratitude ritual to the Apus (sacred mountains)
- Views of Ausangate and surrounding snow-capped peaks
Our guide will also explain:
- Geological formation of Rainbow Mountain
- Mineral composition behind its colors
- Cultural significance for Quechua communities
- History of its tourism discovery
Descent to Phulawasipata
We hike back down the same trail, enjoying different perspectives of the colorful landscapes and capturing unique photos of the mountain from various angles.
Return to Cusipata
We board our transport back to Cusipata, where a well-deserved lunch awaits at a local restaurant to restore energy after the trek.
Lunch and Return to Cusco
We enjoy a traditional Peruvian lunch while sharing the experience of the Rainbow Mountain adventure. Afterwards, we return to Cusco, arriving around 16:30 hrs, concluding this unforgettable full-day experience.
