More Information

Trujillo the city of eternal springtime

Founded in 1534, Trujillo was the first Peruvian city to declare its independence from Spain. Mild climate, radiant sunshine, nearby beaches, exquisite colonial architecture and incredible archaeological sites make Trujillo a must-see on Peru’s northern coast.

It is a modern city and at the same time full of history: an example of this are the Caballitos de Totora that abound in Huanchaco, its most emblematic seaside resort; they are still used for artisanal fishing and were also an important means of transport in the Moche and Chimú cultures.

How to get to the city of Trujillo?

By land

  • Lima – Trujillo: 560 km / 9 hours
  • Chiclayo – Trujillo: 209 km / 3 h 30 min.
  • Piura – Trujillo: 420 km / 6 hours

When to go to Trujillo?

Trujillo is known as the “city of eternal spring” because of its mild climate all year round.

But the best time to visit Trujillo is between February and March, to make the most of the sea and the beach.

Chiclayo

The city of Chiclayo, besides being cheerful and friendly, offers the visitor a rich source of archaeological remains, handicraft products and gastronomic wonders.

The Republican mansions bear witness to an ancient splendour and its museums, which hold magnificent evidence of power, such as the tomb of the Lord of Sipán; no less impressive are the numerous mud pyramids in Túcume,

the Sicán findings in the middle of the Bosque de Pómac Historical Sanctuary and the natural sites such as the Chaparrí Ecological Reserve and the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge, where you can observe spectacled bears and the mythical white-winged guan.

Chachapoyas

Chachapoyas is a town full of rich history and spectacular natural beauty. Here you will find the world’s largest waterfalls, the Gocta Falls, and immense archaeological sites, as well as the charming colonial architecture of the city.

Cajamarca

Cajamarca has gone down in history as the city of the ransom. Here, the Spanish captured the last Inca, Atahualpa, who offered a quarter full of gold and two quarters full of silver for his release.

The promise was kept, and yet the Spaniards executed him, officially beginning the conquest of the Inca Empire.

Cajamarca holds, besides the weight of history, unique attractions: can you imagine a stable where the cows are called by name to be milked and answered? Or a carnival party full of colour and joy, celebrated for 4 consecutive days?

So, this is Cajamarca, that is also the capital of the Peruvian Carnival.
