Itinerary

Day 1: Uyuni – Train Cemetery – Incawasi Island – Uyuni.

We begin our visit to the train cemetery, where the first locomotives that arrived in Bolivia in the 18th century to transport minerals between Pulacayo and Antofagasta are located.

We continue our visit, then we go to the great Salar de Tunupa, our next stop is the town of Colchani, where the locals, native sell salt crafts and make demonstrations about the processing of Salt. Then we enter the same salt, which is the largest white lake of the world with approximately 10,500 km2.

Our visit continues for the Ojos de Sal, Pyramids of Sal, former – Hotel de Sal, nowadays converted into a museum. Finally, we reach Incawasi Island, which is a true Cactus valley in the middle of the salt desert, there you can walk through this unique island, after we make the registration and payment.

Then we will go north to our place of the night. After the registering, we will take you back to the salt flat, to observe the wonderful sunset over this magical place, then we arrived at our resting place in the town of Coqueza, which is located on the slopes of the Tunupa Volcano.

Day 2: Mummies of Tunupa – Hike Viewpoint Tunupa Volcano – Animal Museum Chantani – Uyuni (D – A)

After breakfast we go to the Tunupa mummies, later we will hike to the Tunupa volcano viewpoint, which is located at 4,400 m.

It offers wonderful views of the various colors of the volcano and the great salt flat. Then we go to town of Chantani, for visit the picturesque museum, that was built by the locals entirely of stones. In the afternoon we return to Uyuni.

Important: The hours of the tours will be reconfirmed at the destination.

To visit the Salar de Uyuni 2D: it is best between the months of January – April the tour smay be modified or canceled due to the amount of rain.

The rates valid for Peruvians only include IGV

Children under 02 years and 11 months are considered INF (babies), do not pay any service and do not have the right to food, bed or seat on the tours.

Where is the Salar de Uyuni located?

The Salar de Uyuni is the largest continuous and high salt desert in the world, with an area of ​​10 582 km². It is located at about 3,650 meters above sea level in the southwest of Bolivia, in the Daniel Campos province, in the department of Potosí, within the highland region of the Andes mountain range.

 The weather in the Salar de Uyuni

The weather, climate in the Salar de Uyuni is desert, and the temperature doesn’t change much throughout the year, rainfall during the year.

The average annual temperature in Uyuni is 10.1 ° C. The approximate average rainfall is 124 mm. 

In winter there are the lowest temperatures and the region is usually cold, dry and very windy.

What is the best time to visit the Salar de Uyuni?

Late April is the perfect time to visit Uyuni, as you can see both the dry salt desert and the giant mirror effect. It is not as cold as in winter and rainfall is limited.

How many days is it advisable to be in Uyuni?

The most recommended excursions tours are from one day (for those who do not have much time) to three days (with a visit to other incredible landscapes such as red lagoons, geysers and hot springs).

When does the mirror effect occur in Uyuni?

The best time to get a glimpse of the mirror effect is from mid-January to late February. In this period, the rains that flood the salt and produce this visual effect are concentrated.

Tunupa volcano

Tunupa is a volcano in Bolivia located south of the department of Oruro, bordering the Salar de Uyuni, this volcano has a height of 5,432 meters above sea level.

It has the name of the Andean deity of thunder and lightning Tunupa, it is also an altar of the same.

Chantani Animal Museum

The Chantani museum is located in the community of Chantani in the middle of Coqueza and Tahua, located 20 kilometers from the Salar de Uyuni.

The museum is divided into two sectors:

  • The first is dedicated to the exhibition of older and more recent materials such as tableware, utensils for the kitchen and everyday life, clothing, tools for working the land, old kitchens and more recent times.
  • A second sector where figures of animals armed in stone and exposed in the open air are exhibited. The site is presented as an inanimate zoo, ideal for children
