Kuelap Fortress
A colossal structure containing millions of cubic feet of stone, it is presumed to have taken 200 years to build. It is located between the Marañon and Utcubamba rivers. The fortress of Kuelap is located at 9,843 feet above sea level, so it can be reached either by horseback or by a three to four-hour hike.
The main building group is circular with a main access corridor, inside the massive walls there are over 400 buildings in total, some of which are small round stone houses, the largest of which are up to 1,969 feet long and 66 feet high.
Gocta Waterfall
The Gocta Waterfall, located approximately 2 hours from Chachapoyas, was discovered in 2002 by an expedition led by Stefan Ziemendorf, a German engineer.
Gocta is the third highest waterfall in the world if you consider its two stages of falls together. The view of the landscape is spectacular and the 3 hour hike to the centre of the waterfall is well worth it. The Gocta waterfall is born by the Cocahuayco river falling over a steep cliff from a high plateau and falls for the first thousand metres to a large ledge that interrupts the torrent.
The Sarcophagi of Karajía
Discovered in 1985, the human-shaped tombs are a funerary tradition, with a height of 2.50 metres. Their heads are decorated with skulls, while their faces are broad and flat.
They are located in high crags, at 2,400 metres of vertical rock face, in places that are difficult to access, such as cliff caves and steep slopes. The aim was that the sarcophagi would never be visited and the mummified bodies could rest in peace.
Quiocta Cavern
The caverns of Quiocta, is an attraction located in the department of Amazonas, this natural wonder has an approximate distance of 540 meters. In the beginning of the cavern you can observe cave paintings, as well as animal and human skeletal remains.
This is due to the fact that Quiota was also a place where the Chachapoyas culture carried out their burials, which were accompanied by animal sacrifices and the presentation of offerings in fine ceramics.
In the cave of Quiota there are impressive rock formations of stalagmites and stalactites. In the cavern you can find 7 rooms of these formations among them:
The Pharaoh, The Lanzon, The Mummy, The angel appreciating the birth, The chieftain looking at the princess, among many more. The name comes from the resemblance to these characters.
