Monkey Island: Adventure in the Amazon

148 vistas

The Monkey Island of Iquitos, also known as Monkey Island, is a 450-hectare sanctuary. It is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates victimized by illegal trafficking and deforestation. Founded in 1997 by locals like Gilberto, this paradise is home to seven species of Amazon monkeys. You can find species such as the spiderhowlerwoolly, and tamarin here. They roam freely in a reforested habitat with over 70 types of fruit trees.

This is not a zoo. It’s a center where monkeys are prepared to return to the jungle. You can observe them up close, but always with respect. Many approach curiously, yet the focus remains on responsible conservation.

At Dreamy Tours, we integrate visits to this monkey island into our Amazon tours from Iquitos. Speedboats depart from the port and take you to the island after a 30-45 minute ride. If you prefer the south, a similar spot exists near Puerto Maldonado on the Madre de Dios River. This location is perfect for an Amazon tour that combines animal rescue with hiking. I remember one group that interacted with rehabilitated orphan monkeys. Their laughter upon seeing them play was unforgettable.

Magical Fauna: From the Bufeo Colorado to the Monkey Frog

The Amazon wouldn’t be the same without its unique fauna. The bufeo colorado, or pink river dolphin, is the king of legends: it’s said to transform into a handsome young man during the full moon to seduce people at riverside festivals, explaining ancient mysteries. On our tours, spotting it swimming playfully is a highlight, a symbol of the river’s biodiversity.

Don’t miss the monkey frog, like the Phyllomedusa bicolor or Agalychnis hulli, a tree frog with waxy skin that climbs like a primate and secretes substances used in indigenous rituals. These nocturnal creatures add mystery to guided walks on the island.

Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon and the History of Rubber

The Indigenous peoples of the Amazon, such as the Aimara or Shipibo ethnic groups in Peru, are the guardians of this jungle, with traditions that respect nature. On tours with Dreamy Tours, you visit communities where you learn about their connection to the river, far from the exploitation of the past.

Speaking of history, rubber defined a dark era: during the “rubber holocaust” (1870-1920), Indigenous people were enslaved to extract it, causing genocides in the Peruvian and Colombian Amazon. Today, these stories are shared to honor resilience, and our local guides explain how the rubber boom devastated communities, but the jungle is recovering.

My Experience on the Island with Dreamy Tours

On a recent Amazon tour, I took a family to Monkey Island. We saw released monkeys scampering about, heard legends of the bufeo by the river, and ended with a talk with Indigenous people about sustainability. As an agency, we prioritize ethical tours: no direct contact with animals, support for shelters, and safe navigation in comfortable boats.
