What to see and visit in Iquitos (Peruvian Amazon)

Hello bloggers! Today, we’re talking (and writing!) about the city of Iquitos, located deep in the Peruvian Amazon. Find out more by reading our blog below.

About Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon

Iquitos
Iquitos

Iquitos is the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon—a region full of legends and mysteries.

This extravagant capital of the Peruvian Amazon (in the Loreto region) is the starting point for countless adventures and ways to interact with one of the most enigmatic and lush corners of the world.

Though it may seem small compared to other Peruvian cities, there’s a surprising variety of things to do in Iquitos in just one day, especially in the cultural sphere. Here are some must-see attractions.

What to See in Iquitos

Praça Principal de Iquitos:

The heart of the city, surrounded by colonial architecture and historic buildings, is one of the unmissable spots in Iquitos. Key landmarks include:

  • Heroes’ Obelisk
The square also hosts concerts and cultural events.
  • Iquitos Cathedral

Iron House (Casa de Fierro)

Designed by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the architect of the Eiffel Tower!) in 1890, this building is a symbol of the rubber boom era. Also known as Casa Eiffel, it’s located in the city center (at the intersection of PrĂłspero and Putumayo avenues) and remains one of the best-preserved examples of Peruvian civil architecture.

Historic Boat Museum (Museo Barco HistĂłrico)

Docked at Plaza Castilla, this 1906 steamship was brought from Hamburg, Germany. Now a floating museum on the Itaya River, just steps from the Casa Morey, it stands as a relic of the beloved rubber boom era.
The museum features two main exhibits on the history of Iquitos and the Peruvian Amazon.

Belén Market & Neighborhood

This traditional market offers a vast array of Amazonian products, from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts. It’s also famous for its unique cuisine, including:

  • Charapa (turtle)
  • Lagarto (caiman)
  • Suri (palm grubs)
  • Even monkey meat (for the adventurous eater).

The BelĂ©n neighborhood is often called the “Venice of the Amazon” due to its floating houses and canals, giving the area a magical, one-of-a-kind charm.
