Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Lodge – Shiringuero Camp & Caimanero

Reception at the airport and transfer to our office in the city of Puerto Maldonado. The luggage that you do not need during your stay in the jungle can be stored in our warehouse to avoid transportation hassles.

Embark at Puerto Bolívar towards our Lodge for a 40-minute journey on the Madre de Dios River. Then we will arrive at the Lodge facilities where you will be welcomed with a soft drink of natural fruits of the season. Your guide will give you the necessary explanations for your stay, and you will be given the keys to your bungalow.

After this, you will have some free time to rest until lunch is ready. For passengers arriving with flights after 13:00 Hrs. Lunch will be served in a lunchbox made with 100% recyclable material.

Trail and shiringuero camp: 15:30 Hrs.

Departure for your first contact with the jungle, accompanied by your guide, who will show you the tropical trees, medicinal plants, and other exuberant nature of the 60-hectare concession.

After this botanical walk, we will visit a Shiringuero Camp, one of the most important economic activities in the Madre de Dios region. It is the reproduction of a real camp where you can see the artisanal process of collecting rubber (better known as latex) and which is used for countless products. The time for this trek is 2 hours.

Hereafter we will return to the Lodge where you will have some free time to enjoy the facilities of the lodge. You can relax in the pool or in the hammocks on the terrace of your bungalow, have an exotic cocktail at the bar, have a relaxing massage by qualified staff, buy a souvenir from the handicraft boutique or go to the riverbank to watch the sunset.

Caimaneo: At 19:00 p.m. Before dinner, we will take a night boat ride for a fun “Caiman Safari” where we will see caimans at night in their natural habitat and other nocturnal animals that live on the riverbanks.

Dinner in our dining room at 20:00 p.m.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake – Torre – Chestnut Camp

We will wake up at 5:30 AM to have a coffee or hot infusion before going out to Lake Sandoval. Our guide will give you a bag with breakfast which you can eat during the excursion. At around 6 AM we will be boarding a small boat to drive up to Sandoval Lake.

After navigating for about 20 minutes on the Madre de Dios River, we will arrive at Sandoval Lake. With a 3 km trek through the exuberant vegetation of the tropical forest, we enter the territory of the Tambopata National Reserve. During the hike, you can admire gigantic trees, snakes, monkeys (wasitas, cotomonos or capuchins), birds (highlighting the shanshos, kingfishers and anhingas). Once in Lake Sandoval, we will board a small rowing boat in search of the giant otters that live here. Additionally, we will also be able to observe a great variety of animals such as reptiles, mammals, and birds in their natural state.

Then our guide will look for a suitable place to enjoy our breakfast with a good view to keep marveling at the beauty of nature.

On the way back, we will take into account that we have our complete belongings, and we will start the walk back to the pier of Lake Sandoval. At 1:30 p.m. We will return to the Lodge for lunch.

Visit the “towers” at 15:30 PM: We will visit one of the two towers that the Lodge has in its facilities. One has a height of 20 meters and the other 42 meters. From there we will enjoy a fantastic view over the Peruvian Rainforest. Both towers are designed for bird watching and spotting wildlife from above. So don’t forget your binoculars if you have some. These towers are also excellent places to view the beautiful sunset (the guide will coordinate which one to visit first depending on the preference of the passengers).

Visit to a Chestnut Camp: The chestnut (or Brazil nut, as it is known worldwide, is another of the most important economic activities in the Madre de Dios region.

Free time: Free time to enjoy the pool or a massage, drink something refreshing in our bar, or visit our boutique.

Dinner at 20:00 pm in our facilities.

Day 3: Visit Machiguenga Family.

8:00 am breakfast.

Visit to the Machiguenga Native Family at 09:00 AM.

We will visit a family of natives of the Machiguenga ethnic group, one of the many ethnic groups that exist in the Peruvian Amazon. They will teach us about their cultural customs, values, and their language. They will show us things such as their typical clothing, their hunting art, their crafts, and the music they play during the ayahuasca ceremony. Furthermore, they will show us how they take advantage of natural products to make tools, their homes, clothes and ornaments, all of them important for their daily life.

Visit their crops at 11:00 hrs after about 20 minutes of crossing the river, we will visit their agricultural crops.

This part of the land is worked by the local families. Here we will recognize and even be able to taste different tropical fruits of the season and other native products (cocoa, banana, cocona, tree bread, noni, yucca, lime).

This place belongs to a typical rural family of this area, who maintains it with great care and without chemicals. They sell some of the naturally grown plants at the market of Puerto Maldonado.

Lunch at 13:00 hrs. We will return to the lodge for lunch.

Free time at 14:00 Hrs. Return to the Lodge to rest and have free time to visit the boutique, cool off in the pool, have a cocktail at the bar or have a relaxing massage.

Dinner at 20:00 hrs in our facilities.

Day 4: Parrot Clay Lick

We wake up at 05:30 AM to have a coffee or hot tea before leaving for a walk of approximately 20 minutes to reach the Parrot Clay Lick. This is the favorite place of the parrots, a naturally occurring clay wall where you can observe between 3 to 5 species of parrots, which come to feed from this special clay. This is a special treat for the metabolism of the birds and a truly wonderful and exciting colorful spectacle.

Afterward, we will have a tasty Breakfast at 08:00 AM. Then you will have some free time during which you can visit the local market. Hereafter we will board our boats and leave for the city of Puerto Maldonado.

Once arriving in Puerto Bolivar we will first go to our office. Then we will go to the local market, where we will make a small tour with an average duration of 15 to 20 minutes, where you will be able to appreciate the different local products.

After this visit, we will continue to the airport to check in for your flight.

Important: The exact time schedule of the tour will be confirmed in a previous briefing. Moreover, the order and time schedule of the excursions can be modified according to the physical condition of the passengers and the weather, keeping the passengers’ convenience always as a first priority, our guide will coordinate all changes directly with our management.

Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado is the capital of the Madre de Dios region in southeastern Peru. Capital of the Tambopata district and at the same time of the homonymous province and the department of Madre de Dios.

It is located on the banks of the confluence of the Madre de Dios River and the Tambopata River and is one of the main commercial centres of the Amazon.

What is the best time to travel to Puerto Maldonado?

The best time to travel to Puerto Maldonado is from April to November, where there is a warm or hot climate and only moderate rains. The average maximum temperature in Puerto Maldonado is 35 °C in September and 29 °C in February.

Where is Lake Sandoval located?

Lake Sandoval is located in the Tambopata National Reserve, a place of almost 3,000 square kilometres where flora and fauna are the real protagonists. This area is located in the department of Madre de Dios, south of the city of Puerto Maldonado.

How is Lake Sandoval formed?

It originates on one of the meanders of the Madre de Dios River, on its right bank. It is three kilometres (1.86 miles) long, 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) wide, and a depth ranging from 0.5 to three meters (1.64 to 9.84 feet).  Furthermore, it is shaped like a half moon.

What to do on Lake Sandoval?

The Sandoval Lake is the perfect place to spend a holiday of total relaxation and rest from the daily routine. Since in the lake and its surroundings you can do various activities.

You can take a boat trip on Lake Sandoval:

One of the wonders of this lake is that you can drive on small boats. Paddling through Lake Sandoval while enjoying the landscape that surrounds you, the sounds of nature and the company of black caimans and turtles will make you feel in total freedom.

What does Machiguenga mean?

Machiguenga or Matsiguenga is an Arawak language native to the Amazon rainforest of central and southern Peru. It is currently estimated that about 15,000 people belong to this ethnic group and at least 12,000 speak the language.

What is the life of the Machiguenga families like?

The village Matsigenka people live mainly in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios. In addition, the Ministry of Culture estimates that 670 Matsigenkas in isolation and in initial contact live in other settlements.
