The two areas we most recommend for staying in Lima are Miraflores and Barranco . Both are located near the coast and are popular among tourists due to their welcoming atmosphere, abundance of things to do, and ease of getting around. We’ve personally stayed in both neighborhoods during our month-long trip to Peru.
Which is the safest neighborhood in Lima?
If safety is your top priority when choosing where to stay in Lima, we recommend Miraflores or Barranco . We always felt very safe staying in both areas. They are lively and cosmopolitan, attracting many tourists and are well-policed — especially around Kennedy Park and the beaches.
Barranco is known for its murals, vibrant nightlife, and bohemian charm. What was once home to old mansions dating back to the 1920s has now been restored and transformed into art galleries, cafés, bars, and boutique hotels, making Barranco a magical and unique place.

Miraflores is the most popular area for tourists visiting Lima. It has a lively atmosphere around its small plazas and parks, is close to the beach, and offers easy access to the historic center. Just below Miraflores along the coast lies Barranco , with a more bohemian and artistic vibe.
With its lively plazas, picturesque streets lined with old churches, stunning beaches, and world-famous gastronomy, Miraflores is the most visited neighborhood in Lima by tourists.
The neighborhood centers around Kennedy Park , a compact and tree-lined plaza surrounded by bars and restaurants. You’ll often see street performers, dancers, and musicians in the park throughout the day.
A pleasant 15-minute walk from Kennedy Park will take you to the coast, where you’ll find the colorful Love Park (Parque del Amor) by the sea, and many white-sand beaches. This is one of the best spots for surfing in Lima, with local schools offering lessons and tours along the coastline.

The small district of Barranco is one of the coastal neighborhoods that make up Lima along its Pacific shoreline, nestled between natural cliffs that lead down to the beaches of the Costa Verde . A peaceful urban island filled with low-rise houses and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, it was originally a fishing village located on top of a cliff overlooking the city — hence its name.

These neighborhoods are lively, cosmopolitan, attract many tourists, and are well-patrolled by police, especially around Kennedy Park and the beaches.
