Machu Picchu is the most visited and mysterious citadel to visit in Peru. Every day, a total of two thousand travellers arrive from Lima, the capital of Peru, to Cusco and visit the citadel. From Cusco, there are several ways to get to Machu Picchu.

You can reach the Inca Trail in 2 days, the Inca Trail in 4 days, the Salkantay Trail, the Inca Trail from Cachicata among other alternative paths.

Time:

Travellers would like to have more time to enjoy the stay, package to Machu Picchu, but sometimes, they don’t have time because, work and/or studies.

The price, which increases year after year, increases even more for last minute bookings. Therefore, in order to enter MachuPicchu without unnecessary expenses, it is recommended to purchase your train tickets in advance, in order to avoid last minute inconveniences.

Limited access:

One of the main reasons for not visiting MachuPicchu is the limited access that has existed for some years. For this reason, travellers are advised to purchase all necessary tickets to Machu Picchu as soon as possible.

How to book and buy Machu Picchu tickets.

Access the website of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. Please be patient, as the site may take some time to load. You can change the language to ENGLISH by clicking on the flag in the top right corner.

Choose the places you want to visit: at the top of the calendar, before closing, choose first or visit the place. You must decide whether you want to visit Machu Picchu or visit the Manuel Chavez Museum.

The Manuel Chavez Ballon Museum is a small museum worth seeing before visiting Machu Picchu. It has some artefacts with descriptions in several languages and is located near Águas Calientes village. Then you have to choose your route.

Places: here you can choose if you want to visit only the citadel of Machu Picchu, or if you also want to visit Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain.

Date: after selecting the places to visit, you can choose the day you want to go by clicking on the calendar.

Quantity: choose the number of tickets required: click on the arrows to choose the number of tickets required in quantity.

NOTE: if you need to buy tickets for CHILDREN, click on the button in the top right corner, “Student tickets”. Children under 7 years old are free of charge. Children over 8 years old pay the same as students.

Personal information: you must now enter your information exactly as it appears in your passport.

Final step: finish your application. You are now on the last page. A pop-up window may appear to read the terms and conditions of service. Enter your email address. Verify that all information entered is correct.

Remember, all data must match your previous application. When all these steps are completed, click “Generate Booking”.

You will now see some pop-up windows, including the booking form. This is important, so do not close the window, as the ticket has not yet been paid for! Check the generated booking number on the page and copy it. Then select the “Payment” tab on the main panel, which will take you to a new page.

The sale of tickets to the mountain for the following year does not start until the end of December of the current year. It is advisable to be patient and keep an eye on when tickets go on sale.

Try to buy your tickets to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu close to 24 June, when the Festa do Sol (Inti Raymi) is celebrated in Cusco.

Entry Times to Machu Picchu – 2025

To preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Machu Picchu, visiting time is regulated. Each ticket allows a maximum 4-hour visit (previously 3 hours), divided into different time slots:

  • Slot 1: Entry from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • Slot 2: Entry from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Slot 3: Entry from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

⚠️ It is important to respect the time slot selected when purchasing the ticket.

Available Ticket Types (2025)

  • Only Machu Picchu: General access to the citadel during one time slot.
  • Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu: Includes hike to the famous Huayna Picchu mountain (limited availability).
  • Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain: Includes hike to the main mountain behind the citadel (limited availability).
  • Machu Picchu + Museum: Includes access to the Manuel Chávez Ballón Museum, located before reaching Aguas Calientes.

Requirements for Entry

  • Valid ID Document:
    • Foreign citizens: Passport.
    • Peruvian citizens: National ID (DNI).
  • Printed or digital ticket (must be shown at the entrance).
  • University students: Valid student ID issued by a recognized institution.

Important Notes

Entry is not allowed without a previously reserved ticket.at Machu Picchu, you must first visit the citadel of Machu Picchu and then climb the mountain.

Access to Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain is limited daily. It is recommended to purchase tickets months in advance.

Tickets must be reserved ahead of time, especially during high season (May to September).

Tickets to Machu Picchu Citadel + Machu Picchu Mountain

Machu Picchu Mountain is the second most popular mountain and the best alternative after Huayna Picchu Mountain. Its altitude is 3200 m / 10500 ft. When you reach the top of the mountain, you will be able to see the entire citadel of Machu Picchu (temples, terraces, squares and stairs of the Inca city).

If you use a binocular, you can see the Llactapata mountain, the Salkantay mountain and the Santa Teresa Hydroelectric.

This ticket has three different access times to Machu Picchu mountain.

Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain entrance timetable

  • Machu Picchu Citadel from 6:00 am + Machu Picchu Mountain from 6:00 am – 7:00 am.
  • Machu Picchu Citadel Machu Picchu from 7:00 am + Machu Picchu Mountain from 7:00 am – 8:00 am.
  • Machu Picchu Citadel from 8:00 am + Machu Picchu Mountain from 10:00 am – 11:00 am.

In all three cases, you can enter Machu Picchu from 6:00 am. You can stay inside Machu Picchu until 2:00 pm at the latest.

Machu Picchu Citadel + Chavez Museum Tickets.

The Manuel Chávez Ballón Museum, located in Águas Calientes village, will allow you to learn more about the history of Machu Picchu and its Inca Empire. With a complete display of objects found in the Inca city and an interesting multimedia exhibition.

The combined Machu Picchu + Museum ticket will provide a unique cultural experience, as you can visit the entire Inca city of Machu Picchu and enter the local museum.

You can enter Machu Picchu according to your chosen schedule:

  • Machu Picchu in the morning: 6:00 – 13:00.
  • Machu Picchu in the afternoon: 14:00 – 17:00.

The time of your visit will depend on the shift you choose to enter Machu Picchu.

IMPORTANT:

  • If you wish to book the Machu Picchu + Mountain ticket online, you can only select a one-time slot for your entrance. Also choose at what time you want to climb the mountain.
  • It is very important to pay 100% of your entrance fees.
