Day 5: Maras And Moray – Inca Engineering and Science

Breakfast: at the hotelStart: 8:30 am approx.

After breakfast, we prepare to explore two unique archaeological sites that demonstrate the ingenuity and advanced scientific understanding of the Inca civilization: Maras and Moray.

The tour will begin between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. We will first visit Maras, a picturesque Andean town located 3,300 meters above sea level, from where we will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Urubamba mountain range, including the imposing snow-capped mountains of La Verónica (5,682 meters above sea level) and Chikón (5,530 meters above sea level).

Nearby, we will explore the famous salt mines, an extraordinary complex of more than 3,000 salt pools used since pre-Inca times through a sophisticated natural evaporation system. We will continue to Moray, located just 7 kilometers southwest of Maras.

This unique archaeological site is characterized by gigantic natural depressions ingeniously exploited by the Incas to build concentric terrace systems, each with its own microclimate and sophisticated irrigation canals.

Moray functioned as an advanced agricultural laboratory, where Inca scientists conducted studies on crop adaptation to different climatic conditions, enabling the development of more than 1,500 varieties of potatoes and 150 types of corn, which represent approximately 60% of the vegetable products consumed in the world today.

In the afternoon, return to Cusco with free time to rest or engage in activities on your own.

Day 6: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) – Andean Natural Wonder

Breakfast: on the roadStart: 4:30 am approx.

Get ready for an especially exciting day as we set out to conquer one of the most impressive and photographed natural wonders of the Peruvian Andes: the spectacular Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain.

We’ll start very early, with pickup between 4:30 and 4:40 a.m., to begin a journey of approximately 2 hours to the picturesque district of Cusipata. There, we’ll enjoy a nutritious Andean breakfast to fuel our energy needs.

Afterward, we’ll continue to the base station, the starting point for our hike to Rainbow Mountain. We’ll begin a moderate 4-kilometer hike (approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of gradual ascent).

Upon reaching the summit, we will contemplate one of the most striking natural spectacles on the planet: multicolored mineral bands that form a true geological rainbow over the mountain. We will have plenty of time to admire this natural wonder and capture memorable photographs.

After this unique experience, we will begin the descent to our starting point and head to a cozy country restaurant in Cusipata to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch with typical regional dishes.

It also includes accommodation, breakfasts, a professional bilingual guide, and a round-trip train ticket from Cusco.

What is the best Cusco Machu Picchu tour package?

The best package is the 7-day one because it combines the highlights: culture, history, nature, and adventure. It includes the City Tour, Sacred Valley, Maras and Moray, Rainbow Mountain, and of course, Machu Picchu. Furthermore, it’s designed to suit different ages and energy levels. It’s ideal if you want to explore Cusco at a relaxed pace and have a deep, immersive experience, not just a touristy one.

What do you do on a 7-Day Machu Picchu Tour?

In these 7 days, you will see the most important sites in and around Cusco. You start with a walk through the historic center, then visit traditional towns like Pisac and Ollantaytambo, explore ancient Inca salt mines and agricultural centers (Maras and Moray), hike to a uniquely colorful mountain, and finish with a guided tour of Machu Picchu. It’s a well-balanced trip between relaxation, culture, and adventure.

What is the Sacred Valley Tour and what places does it visit?

The Sacred Valley Tour takes you to one of the most beautiful and spiritual places in Peru. It includes visits to Pisac (an artisan market and ruins), Ollantaytambo (an Inca fortress and town with original streets), and Chinchero (an Andean textile center). It’s a journey full of landscapes, history, and contact with local communities. Many people combine it with the train to Machu Picchu.

What do you see on the Cusco City Tour?

The Cusco City Tour lasts half a day and takes you to the most important sites in the historic center. We visit the Cathedral, the Church of the Society of Jesus (La Compañía), and then head out of the city to see Sacsayhuamán (an impressive Inca fortress), Qenqo (a ceremonial site), Puka Pukara (“the red fortress”), and Tambomachay (the Inca baths). Everything is accompanied by a guide who tells you the history behind each stone.

What is the Maras Moray Tour and why is it special?

This tour visits two fascinating places: Maras, where there are thousands of small salt pans that have been operating since Inca times, and Moray, a set of circular terraces that the Incas used to study crops. It’s a short trip, ideal for half a day, and combines nature, ancient engineering, and living culture. Many people do it before or after going to the Sacred Valley.

Is the Rainbow Mountain Tour in Cusco worth it?

Absolutely! The Rainbow Mountain, also called Vinicunca, is one of the most impressive landscapes in Peru. Its colorful stripes were formed by minerals and the passage of time. Even though you have to hike for about 2-3 hours (depending on your pace), the effort is worth it. It’s an unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise. We recommend bringing warm clothes and trekking poles if you need them.

What is the South Valley Tour and what places does it include?

The South Valley Tour takes you to three lesser-known but very interesting places: Tipón (a terrace system with water that still flows), Pikillacta (a very well-preserved pre-Inca city), and Andahuaylillas, home to the “Sistine Chapel of America” due to its colonial paintings. It’s ideal if you want to escape the crowds and see another side of the region.

What is the Machu Picchu Tour from Cusco like?

This tour starts in Cusco with a transfer to Ollantaytambo, where you take the train to Aguas Calientes. The next day, very early, you take a bus up to Machu Picchu for a 2-3 hour guided tour. Then you have free time to explore, take pictures, or hike Huayna Picchu (if you have the ticket). Finally, you return by train and transfer back to Cusco.

What can I see in Cusco if I have 7 full days?

In 7 days you can do a complete itinerary: City Tour, Sacred Valley, Maras and Moray, Rainbow Mountain, and Machu Picchu. You can also include a rest day in Cusco to try local food, visit museums, or do a weaving workshop. It’s enough time to enjoy everything without rushing and to acclimatize properly to the altitude.

What’s the difference between a 7-Day Cusco package and shorter ones?

The 7-day package gives you time to explore at a relaxed pace. Shorter tours (2 or 3 days) only include the basics: the train and Machu Picchu. With 7 days, you can do more activities, acclimatize better to the altitude, and have a more complete experience without rushing. Furthermore, many packages include discounts for longer stays.

What is the Tipón Pikillacta Tour?

It’s a tour of two important archaeological sites in the South Valley. Tipón has a system of canals and terraces that demonstrate the Incas’ hydraulic knowledge. Pikillacta is a city built by the Wari, a civilization that predates the Inca Empire. It’s a calm tour, ideal for history and archaeology lovers.

What is the best time of year to visit Machu Picchu?

The best time is from May to October. This is the dry season, with sunny days and clear views. However, it’s also the most crowded. From November to April there is more rain, but fewer tourists and greener landscapes. The important thing is to book months in advance, especially if you want to hike Huayna Picchu or Rainbow Mountain.

What are the 7-Day Machu Picchu Tours?

They are comprehensive packages that include all the main tours from Cusco. They generally cover the City Tour, Sacred Valley, Maras Moray, Rainbow Mountain, and the visit to Machu Picchu. They are ideal for those arriving from Lima or abroad who want a complete experience without having to organize every detail. Everything is coordinated: transportation, accommodation, entrance tickets, and guides.

What do you do on the Chinchero Tour?

In Chinchero, you visit a traditional town famous for its Andean textiles. You will learn how they weave with natural wool using techniques passed down through generations. You will also see the colonial church built on top of an Inca palace and enjoy views of the Sacred Valley. It’s a cultural and human experience, not just a tourist one.

What are Cusco adventure tours?

These are tours designed for those seeking thrills. They include activities like hiking Rainbow Mountain, trekking in the Cordillera, mountain biking, or even hiking around Machu Picchu. Many combine them with cultural tours for a balanced trip of both adrenaline and knowledge.

What will I see on the Ollantaytambo Cusco tour?

Ollantaytambo is a massive Inca fortress built into a mountainside. It’s also a town with original streets from the Inca era, where Quechua families still live. It’s a magical place with special energy. Additionally, it’s the train station for Machu Picchu, so many people visit it before catching the train.

What is included in a Peru tours Cusco Machu Picchu package?

These are typically packages from Lima or from abroad. They include a flight to Cusco, all the main tours (City Tour, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu), accommodation, breakfasts, guides, and entrance tickets. They are ideal for foreigners who want a single point of contact to organize their entire trip to Southern Peru.

What is it like to visit Maras and Moray in Peru?

Visiting Maras and Moray is like traveling back in time. In Maras, you see thousands of salt ponds that glitter in the sun. In Moray, you walk among large circular terraces that the Incas used as an agricultural laboratory. The weather is pleasant, the landscape is beautiful, and you can buy salt or crafts directly from the local community members.

What are the 7-day Cusco cultural tours?

These are tours focused on the history, traditions, and local life of Cusco. They include a City Tour, visits to communities, weaving or cooking workshops, and tours of archaeological sites like Pisac, Ollantaytambo, or Tipón. They are ideal if you want to understand Inca and Andean culture beyond just taking photos.

Can you do the Machu Picchu tour from Cusco in one day?

Yes, but it’s very intense. You leave Cusco very early, take the train, visit Machu Picchu, and return the same day. It’s exhausting, especially due to the altitude and travel time. The recommended option is to stay at least one night in Aguas Calientes to enjoy it without rushing and have the energy to explore properly.

Do I need to book Machu Picchu in advance?

Yes, and by months! Only 2,500 people are allowed in per day, and tickets sell out quickly, especially in the high season (June-August). If you want to hike Huayna Picchu or Rainbow Mountain, you should book 4-6 months in advance. We handle the tickets for you.

Does the Sacred Valley tour include food?

Most tours include lunch at a local restaurant or buffet. Some more comprehensive packages include all meals. If you have a special diet (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), please let us know in advance so we can coordinate.

Is the Rainbow Mountain tour safe?

Yes, it is safe if you go with a professional agency. We carry oxygen, a first-aid kit, trained guides, and support vehicles. The altitude (5,200 meters / 17,060 ft) can affect some people, but we give you time to acclimatize and offer coca tea to help. The important thing is to go slowly and listen to your body.

Can I do the Cusco city tour if I have mobility issues?

Some parts of the city tour (like Sacsayhuamán) have slopes and stairs. If you have difficulties, we can adapt the itinerary or use private transport between sites. Please let us know beforehand so we can plan a comfortable experience for you.

What clothes should I wear for the Maras Moray tour?

Wear comfortable clothes and layers: a t-shirt, a fleece, and a light jacket. The weather changes quickly; it can be sunny and then rain. Athletic shoes are ideal. I also recommend a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Are there bathrooms on the South Valley tours?

Yes, there are public restrooms (though basic) at all the archaeological sites (Tipón, Pikillacta, Andahuaylillas). We also stop at small shops or community centers where you can use the facilities. We always carry water and hand sanitizer.

What’s the difference between the 7-day and the 4-day Machu Picchu tour?

The 7-day tour is more complete: it includes more tours (like Maras Moray or Rainbow Mountain) and time to rest. The 4-day tour is faster: City Tour, Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu. Both are good, but the 7-day tour allows you to enjoy more without rushing.

Can I combine the Chinchero tour with Pisac?

Absolutely! Many tours combine Chinchero, Pisac, and Ollantaytambo in a single day. This way you experience markets, ruins, and traditional weaving. It’s an excellent way to see the best of the Sacred Valley in less time.

What should I do if I get altitude sickness in Cusco?

It’s normal. Cusco is at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft), and many people feel dizzy or tired for the first few days. We recommend: resting, drinking lots of water, drinking coca tea, and avoiding alcohol. If the discomfort persists, we have contacts with clinics and can help you. The important thing is not to push yourself.
