Itinerary
In this program, we will visit one of the most breathtaking natural attractions of the Cusco region: the Mountain of 7 Colors, also known as Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca. This destination is famous for its vibrant colors and its location near the majestic Ausangate, the highest mountain in Cusco at 6,372 meters above sea level.
The tour begins with pickup from your hotel between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. From there, we travel approximately two hours south to reach the district of Cusipata, where you can enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast and take a short rest. Afterward, we continue for one more hour to the bus station, the starting point of our hike toward Rainbow Mountain.
A Scenic Hike through the Andes
The hike covers about 4 kilometers and lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Along the way, you’ll be captivated by the region’s flora and fauna. Llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas are often seen in their natural habitat, accompanied by stunning views of Apu Sarinini and the surrounding Andean peaks.
According to Inca mythology, this area — especially the nearby Lake Sivinacocha — is considered the birthplace of masculine energy that fertilizes Pachamama, the sacred Mother Earth. This cultural meaning adds a deep spiritual dimension to the already awe-inspiring landscape.
Once we reach the summit of Rainbow Mountain (5,200 m.a.s.l.), we will have enough time to take photos, rest, and enjoy the panoramic views. A professional guide will share insights into the geological formation of the mountain and its cultural significance.
Return and Farewell
After our visit, we will descend by the same trail back to the bus station. Our transportation will take us to a countryside buffet restaurant in Cusipata, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch. Finally, we return to Cusco, arriving around 4:30 p.m., concluding an unforgettable full-day adventure.

Facts about Rainbow Mountain in Peru
Here are some interesting facts about Rainbow Mountain Peru that you should know before arriving at this amazing destination:
How could the altitude affect me?
Vinicunca is located at 5,200 MASL (meters above sea level). Therefore, if the altitude affects you, you could feel symptoms such as headache, dizziness, insomnia, loss of appetite, and loss of energy.
To minimize these effects, we recommend acclimatizing for at least one day in the city of Cusco, while also drinking plenty of fluids and eating foods that give your body energy. If needed, you can consult your doctor beforehand.
The hike’s level of difficulty
The 3- to 4-hour hike (depending on the physical condition of the tourist) is not dangerous and requires moderate to high physical effort. There are sections with considerable up and down slopes.
However, one of the biggest difficulties is the cold weather and the freezing wind. The altitude of the area can cause altitude sickness or mountain fever.
What kind of clothes should I bring for the Rainbow Mountain tour?
Clothing that you feel comfortable in, preferably a warm jacket, comfortable trousers, trekking shoes, a sunhat, and sunscreen.
How far is Rainbow Mountain from Cusco?
Vinicunca is approximately 140 km away from the city of Cusco.
For people who prefer a less intensive hike, you could opt to visit the Palcoyo Mountain, which exhibits formations in ocher and red colors, with green, blue and white stripes. This alternative option offers you a less demanding hike of a gentle 1-hour walk without steep slopes, unlike the hike to Vinicunca – Rainbow Mountain.
