More Information

What is the Short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail is a shorter version of the traditional Inca Trail, perfect for those with limited time or who prefer a lighter hike. Instead of 4 days, it lasts only 2 days. It starts at kilometer 104, follows part of the original trail built by the Incas, and ends at Machu Picchu. It’s ideal for enjoying the nature, the history, and arriving at the citadel without a very long trek.

How long is the 2-day Inca Trail?

This trek lasts exactly 2 days and 1 night. On the first day, you hike about 3 to 4 hours from the starting point (Km 104) to the campsite near Wiñay Wayna. On the second day, you get up early, hike to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), enter Machu Picchu, and take a guided tour. It’s a comfortable pace, without rushing, and perfect for families or people who don’t hike often.

What is included in the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu tour?

This tour includes everything you need: transportation from your hotel in Cusco, a professional bilingual guide, the official entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast), camping equipment (tents, sleeping pads), a kitchen crew, and assistants. You also have access to bathrooms along the trail and constant help from the team if you need to rest or ride a mule (for an extra cost).

What is the Inca Trail Short?

The Inca Trail Short is the English name for the “camino inca corto.” It is exactly the same route: a 2-day hike on the ancient Inca trail, with visits to archaeological sites like Wiñay Wayna, and it ends with entering Machu Picchu through the Inti Punku. Many foreign travelers search for it by this name, and it’s an excellent option to experience the magic of the Inca Trail without hiking for 4 days.

Can I do the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu if I’m not very athletic?

Yes, many people do it without being hiking experts. The route is moderate: there are uphill and downhill sections, but you can go slowly. The altitude (up to 2,700 meters / 8,858 feet) can affect you a bit, but since it only lasts 2 days, your body doesn’t suffer as much. The most important thing is to acclimatize in Cusco for 1 or 2 days before the trek and have a positive attitude.

What is a 2-day Machu Picchu trek?

A 2-day Machu Picchu trek is a two-day hike that takes you directly to the Machu Picchu citadel via the Inca Trail. It’s not the classic 4-day trek, but a shorter, more accessible version. It includes a night of camping, meals, a guide, and the entrance to Machu Picchu. It’s ideal if you have limited time but don’t want to miss the experience of arriving on foot.

How do I get the Inca Trail permit?

The Inca Trail permit is handled by your travel agency, because individuals cannot purchase it directly. There are only 200 daily spots for tourists (plus guides and assistants), and they sell out months in advance, especially during the high season (May to September). Therefore, you must book your tour well in advance. We manage your official permit with the Ministry of Culture.

What is the best time for the Inca Trail?

The best time for the Inca Trail is from May to October. It’s the dry season, with sunny days and clear views. This is when the most tourists go, so you must book 4 to 6 months in advance. From November to April there is more rain, but fewer people and greener landscapes. The Short Inca Trail is open all year, except in February when it closes for maintenance.

What should I bring on the Inca Trail?

The essentials are: comfortable clothing in layers (t-shirt, fleece, waterproof jacket), trekking shoes, a small backpack, a hat, sunscreen, water (1.5–2 liters), snacks, a flashlight, toilet paper, a personal first-aid kit, and your documents. We also recommend trekking poles, a sleeping bag (some agencies rent them), and a trash bag. Everything else (tent, food, guide) is included in the tour.

What is Wiñay Wayna Machu Picchu and why do we visit it?

Wiñay Wayna Machu Picchu is a stunning Inca archaeological complex located very close to the Short Inca Trail. It has perfectly constructed terraces, water channels, and ceremonial buildings. Many consider it a “miniature version” of Machu Picchu. We visit it on the afternoon of the first day, before camping. It’s a magical place, full of energy and with beautiful views.

What is Inti Punku and why is it important?

Inti Punku, which means “Sun Gate,” is the highest point on the Short Inca Trail. From there, you see Machu Picchu in all its splendor for the first time, surrounded by mountains and clouds. It is one of the most exciting moments of the trip. The Incas used it as a viewpoint and control point for entering the citadel. Arriving here at sunrise is an unforgettable experience.

Is the Short Inca Trail safe?

Yes, it is very safe if you go with a professional agency. Our guides are trained in first aid, we carry emergency oxygen, and we know the trail well. There are bathrooms at the campsite and official checkpoints. Furthermore, if you feel unwell, you can ride a mule (for an extra cost). The most important thing is to go slowly and listen to your body.

Can you do a 2-day Cusco to Machu Picchu tour without hiking?

Yes, there are 2-day tours from Cusco to Machu Picchu that do not include hiking. On those, you take the train directly from Ollantaytambo or Poroy, spend the night in Aguas Calientes, and the next day you visit Machu Picchu. But if you want to experience the adventure of hiking the Inca trail, the Short Inca Trail is the best 2-day option with trekking.

Where do you eat during the trek?

During the trek, you eat meals prepared by our cooks. Lunch is a buffet with options like soup, rice, pasta, meat, vegetables, and fruit. Dinner and breakfast are also complete and nutritious. All food is fresh and cooked at the campsite. If you are vegetarian, vegan, or have allergies, let us know in advance and we will prepare it without any problem.

Are there bathrooms on the Short Inca Trail?

Yes, there are bathrooms at the campsite and at some points along the trail, like at Wiñay Wayna. They are basic public bathrooms, but clean. There are no showers, but we provide wet towels. It is recommended to bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as sometimes there isn’t any available.

Can I climb Huayna Picchu on the 2-day tour?

Only if you book it well in advance. The ticket to climb Huayna Picchu is very limited (300 people per day) and sells out quickly. If you want to include it, you must let us know at the time of booking. The Short Inca Trail ends early, so there is time to climb it, but it requires good physical condition.

What happens if it rains on the 2-day Inca Trail?

If it rains, we continue the tour with waterproof gear. The Short Inca Trail has stone-paved and well-drained sections, so it doesn’t become impossible. The important thing is to bring a good jacket, a rain cover for your backpack, and non-slip shoes. The rain also makes the landscape look greener and more magical.

Can children go on the Short Inca Trail?

Yes, children over 8 years old can do it without any problem. It’s a good entry point for family trekking. It is recommended that they are used to walking and are accompanied by an adult. Some parents bring small trekking poles to help them. If you have doubts, talk to your agency before booking.

Why is it called the Inca Trail Short?

It’s called the Inca Trail Short because it is the short version of the Inca Trail. While the original lasts 4 days, this one only lasts 2. It is perfect for international travelers who have limited time but don’t want to miss the experience of hiking to Machu Picchu via the Inca trail.

What is the difference between the Short Inca Trail and the classic 4-day one?

The main difference is the duration and distance. The classic lasts 4 days and 3 nights, starts further away, and passes by more archaeological sites. The Short Inca Trail lasts 2 days, starts at Km 104, and is more accessible. Both end at Machu Picchu through the Inti Punku. If you have time, the classic is more complete. If not, the short one is excellent.

What is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu tour and who is it ideal for?

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu tour is a 2-day adventure that combines history, nature, and culture. It is ideal for people who want to experience the excitement of hiking the Inca trail but don’t have a full 4 days. Perfect for families, couples, or travelers with limited time who don’t want to miss Machu Picchu.

Can you get the Inca Trail permit on your own?

No, the Inca Trail permit can only be processed by an authorized tourism agency. The Peruvian government does not sell tickets directly to individual tourists. Therefore, you must book with an agency that includes the official permit for you. If someone offers you “just the permit,” be wary: it doesn’t exist.

What clothes to wear during the best season for the Inca Trail?

During the best season for the Inca Trail (May to October), the days are sunny but the nights are cold. Wear clothing in layers: a short-sleeve shirt, a fleece, a warm jacket, and comfortable pants. Wear a sun hat and gloves if you get cold. On the early morning of the second day, you will need warm clothes for the Inti Punku.

What should not be missing from my backpack for the Inca Trail?

Do not forget: water (1.5–2 liters), snacks (crackers, dried fruit, chocolate), a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, a headlamp, documents (passport, ticket), trekking poles (if you use them), and a trash bag. Everything else (tent, food, guide) is provided by the agency.

What will I see at Wiñay Wayna Machu Picchu?

At Wiñay Wayna Machu Picchu you will see perfectly aligned terraces, water channels that still function, small temples, and ceremonial structures. It is built into a mountainside with spectacular views. It’s a peaceful place, full of energy, and many guides tell stories about its sacred use. It is a mandatory stop before camping.

What does Inti Punku mean and why is it special?

Inti Punku means “Sun Gate” in Quechua. It is special because from there you see Machu Picchu for the first time in all its splendor. The Incas used it as a ceremonial entrance. Arriving here at sunrise, with the mist settling between the mountains, is one of the most magical moments of the trip.

What to do in Aguas Calientes, Peru after Machu Picchu?

After visiting Machu Picchu, you can relax in Aguas Calientes, Peru. You can try local food, take a bath in the hot springs (for a fee), buy souvenirs, or simply walk around the picturesque town. There are also ATMs, shops, and a train station to return to Cusco.

Is it necessary to acclimatize before the Short Inca Trail?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Cusco is at 3,400 meters (11,155 ft), and the trek starts at 2,700 meters (8,858 ft). Although it’s not as high, many people feel dizzy or tired in the first few days. Spend at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco before the trek: rest, drink water, drink coca tea, and avoid alcohol.

What is included in the 2-day Machu Picchu trek?

The 2-day Machu Picchu trek includes: transportation from Cusco, an expert guide, all meals, camping equipment, the entrance to Machu Picchu, access to the Inca Trail, and basic medical assistance. Everything is organized so you only have to enjoy yourself. Just bring your personal backpack with the essentials.

Can the tour be canceled if there is a health problem?

Yes, but it depends on the agency’s policy. Some offer date changes or partial refunds if you present a medical certificate. If you feel sick during the trek, the guide can help you get down by mule or take an emergency train. Your safety is the most important thing.
