Itinerary

In this program, we will visit one of the most breathtaking natural attractions of the region of Cusco “The mountain of 7colors”.

The Rainbow Mountain tour starts by picking you up from your hotel between 4.00 and 4.30 am. Then we will travel for 2 hours towards the south until we reach the district of Cusipata, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet and take a brief rest.

Then, we will continue for 1 hour to the bus station, from where we will start our hike to the Mountain of Colours (4 km).

The hike will last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, during which you can be enthralled by flora and fauna, amongst which the Llamas and Alpacas mark the special highlight. Additionally, you will be able to see the Apu Sarinini and the Ausangate which is the highest mountain of Cusco with an altitude of 6372 MASL.

According to Inca mythology, this mountain and its surrounding lakes, in particular the lake Sivinacocha, are the birthplaces of the masculine energy that fertilizes the holy mother earth “Pachamama”.

After a good hike, we will arrive at the top of the Rainbow Mountain where we will have enough time to enjoy the place with its astounding view and take some pictures. A professional guide will give you a short explanation and will be at your disposal for all your questions.

Thereafter we will hike the same route back, to the bus station and from there, take the transportation towards Cusipata, where we will be able to enjoy a delicious lunch at a buffet restaurant in the countryside.

This will be the last stop of our beautiful experience, before going back to Cusco, where we will arrive approximately at 4.30 pm.

Facts about Rainbow Mountain in Peru

Here are some interesting facts about Rainbow Mountain Peru that you should know before arriving at this amazing destination:

How could the altitude affect me?

Vinicunca is located at 5,200 MASL (meters above sea level), if the altitude affects you, you could feel symptoms such as headache, dizziness, insomnia, loss of appetite, and loss of energy.

We recommend acclimatizing for at least 1 day in the city of Cusco, while drinking plenty of fluids, and eating foods that give your body energy, if necessary you can consult your doctor beforehand.

The hike’s level of difficulty

The 3- to 4-hour hike (depending on the physical condition of the tourist) is not dangerous and requires moderate to high physical effort. There are sections with considerable up and down slopes.

However, one of the biggest difficulties is the cold weather and the freezing wind. The altitude of the area can cause altitude sickness or mountain fever.

What kind of clothes should I bring for the Rainbow Mountain tour?

Clothing that you feel comfortable in, preferably a warm jacket, comfortable trousers, trekking shoes, a sunhat, and sunscreen.

How far is Rainbow Mountain from Cusco?

Vinicunca is approximately 140 km away from the city of Cusco.

For people who prefer a less intensive hike, you could opt to visit the Palcoyo Mountain, which exhibits formations in ocher and red colors, with green, blue and white stripes. This alternative option offers you a less demanding hike of a gentle 1-hour walk without steep slopes, unlike the hike to Vinicunca – Rainbow Mountain.
