More Information
Where is the Salar de Uyuni located?
In the southwest of Bolivia, in the department of Potosí, is the Salar de Uyuni, a salty desert so wide, that it can be seen from space. The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt desert continuous and high in the world, with an area of 10,582 km², located at about 3,650 meters above sea level in southwestern Bolivia.
This makes this endless white sheet, that is the Salar de Uyuni become confused with the sky on the distant horizon. The salt flat reflects the clouds, when it is slightly covered with water. Especially between the months of January and March, in the rainy season.
The best time to visit and enjoy the Salar de Uyuni is November, the breeding month of the three species of elegant flamingos, that live near the multiple lagoons of the place.
Mirror effect in the Uyuni salt flat
In the end of the rainy seasons (February-March), the salt flats change, creating a mirror thanks to a mineral called Ulexite, the «television stone». It is transparent and has the power to refract the image of the surface.
The salt becomes waterproof and causes the water to accumulate on the surface, creating a unique mirror.
Seeing the sunrise with this great reflection that the salt creates is something indescribable that all travelers should experience.
Train graveyard
The great cemetery of dead trains, have been adrift since the 18th century, located halfway to Uyuni. Rust-strewn wagons and locomotives are found stranded on the frozen ground of the Bolivian highlands.
The train cemetery has become a place full of stories and memories of the past, where visitors see the ruins of the past of trains that have been looted.
How to get to the Salar de Uyuni?
The tour organization (Agencies) of your trip to the Salar de Uyuni, they are located between Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, will depend on where you come from. Tours depart from three locations:
1. From Uyuni (Bolivia). You can take the service from the same city in Bolivia. And, we recommend to look for references of the tour operators, the duration of the tours varies from 1 to 4 days.
2. From San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). The agencies take the travelers to the border, before they give the rest of the excursion to a Bolivian tour operator. Due to the distance, it is a 3-day trip.
3. From La Paz (Bolivia). Tours to the Uyuni salt flat, from the capital of Bolivia, with a duration of 2 to 3 days.
When to travel to the Salar de Uyuni?
The Uyuni salt flat has two different seasons.
The rainy season, which is from December to April, is the time when the visitors come to witness the overwhelming mirror effect of the salt flat. It is recommended to take into account the excessive rain fall, which is from December to January, because of these reasons the tours could be canceled.
During the dry season from May to November, temperatures are cooler, the ground is hard, and travelers can drive through the bleak white landscape past places that are not accessible during the rainy season.
How to get the best photos?
One of the highlights of the Salar de Uyuni is the endless horizon that allows photographers to play with perspective and depth of field.
The key to taking the best photos is to put the camera as low as you can and close to the object you are using. This provides a perspective in which said element is larger than human subjects, who would be further apart.
But don’t let your subjects venture too far – the more distance between the subject and the subject, the more difficult it will be to maintain focus. If your camera allows it, make the aperture as narrow as possible.
INFORMATION BEFORE TRAVELING
Due to its location at 3,650 meters above sea level, visitors could feel altitude sickness if they have not acclimatized properly. Symptoms include nausea, headache, and insomnia and others effects.
It is recommended that before your trip, you talk, see with your doctor about the options you have to prevent and treat altitude sickness.
