Day 5: Maras And Moray – Inca Engineering and Science

After breakfast, we prepare to explore two unique archaeological sites that demonstrate the ingenuity and advanced scientific understanding of the Inca civilization: Maras and Moray.

The tour will begin between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. We will first visit Maras, a picturesque Andean town located 3,300 meters above sea level, from where we will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Urubamba mountain range, including the imposing snow-capped mountains of La Verónica (5,682 meters above sea level) and Chikón (5,530 meters above sea level).

This ancient Inca city known as Machu Picchu or Machupicchu, is one of Peru’s most precious treasures. It was built in the middle of the 15th century and it is believed that it was one of the residences of the ninth Inca of the Tahuantinsuyo, Pachacutec

(considered the great transformer of the Inca empire), although in it there are also the remains of a great Sanctuary (Sacred Place where they worshipped their diverse gods, especially the Sun God), with diverse temples such as: temple of the sun, temple of the 3 windows, temple of the Pachamama, the Inti Huatana, the royal Mausoleum, among others,

Its name means old mountain – Machu Picchu, and refers to the place where it is located, at about 2453 m.a.s.l., on a rocky premonitory between Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Machu Picchu is divided into 3 sectors: agricultural sector, religious sector, urban sector.

Today, this Inca jewel is one of the country’s tourist attractions. Travellers come to Aguas Calientes to start the Inca route made popular by Hiram Bingham at the beginning of the 20th century.

It is located 74 km from the city of Cusco. It is an old colonial town that stands out for its noble coats of arms, of noble Indians of the colony, which are still visible on the lintels of some of the doors.

During the colonial period, being very close to the Salineras Salt Mines, it was an important political and administrative enclave.

It is located 7 km west of the town of Maras and at an altitude of 3500 metres above sea level.

The salt mines of Salineras or also known as Salinera de Maras.

It is made up of more than 3000 small wells that are dug into the steep slope of a ravine. In these wells, following ancestral methods, the salt water that emanates from the Qaqawiñay mountain spring is stored and crystallised. Once the water has evaporated, the salt is ready for sale.

Discovery of the Rainbow Mountain in Peru

The visual spectacle offered by Rainbow Mountain in Peru has attracted visitors since its discovery in 2016, according to Haydee Pacheco, tourism official of the Municipality of Pitumarca.

We asked elders living in Pitumarca, a village near Vinicunca, about the discovery of Rainbow Mountain in Peru “and they said the mountain used to have snow,” Machacca said in a recent interview. “Global warming caused the ice to melt and the colourful mountain appeared underneath.”

Machacca, a member of the Q’ero community, said Cerro Colorado was an attractive destination for hikers because of its beauty, but also because of the weather. “They love to go because when you are up there you feel the pure air and you forget about everything and you connect with the Apu of Ausangate,” he said, referring to the divinities believed to be part of the Andes Mountains.

Few knew of the existence of this 5,200-metre summit. Its vision was a privilege reserved for the vigorous trekkers who dared to explore for five days the domains of Ausangate, the highest peak of Cusco and the Vilcanota mountain range, a place of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of people who come to its icy grandeur to worship the Lord of Qoyllur Riti, the ‘star of snow’.
