It is worth noting that spinning and weaving are carried out primarily by men from the age of eight, while women exclusively make threads. More Information

What is the Arequipa City Tour and what places does it include?

The Arequipa City Tour is a guided visit to the main attractions of the “White City,” built with sillar (white volcanic stone). This tour includes the Plaza de Armas, the Arequipa Cathedral, the Santa Catalina Monastery, and iconic spots like Yanahuara and Carmen Alto—two viewpoints offering spectacular views of the Chachani and Misti volcanoes. It’s perfect for discovering colonial history, unique architecture, and local culture from day one.

Why is Arequipa known as the “White City”?

Arequipa is called the “White City” because of the predominant use of sillar, a white volcanic stone that covers its historic buildings. This feature gives the city a bright and elegant look, especially under the sun. The historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, blends colonial and republican architecture with inner courtyards, wooden balconies, and cobblestone streets.

What can you see from the Carmen Alto Viewpoint in Arequipa?

From the Carmen Alto Viewpoint, you get panoramic views of the city and, especially, the Chachani volcano—one of the highest in Peru. It’s an ideal spot at sunset, with benches and green areas for relaxation. You can also admire the white architecture that characterizes Arequipa and take amazing photos with the volcanoes in the background.

What is the Yanahuara Viewpoint and why is it famous?

The Yanahuara Viewpoint is one of Arequipa’s most iconic spots. It stands out for its colonial sillar arches carved with saints and its direct views of the Misti volcano. This historic and photogenic place is popular among both tourists and locals. It’s part of the traditional city tour and represents the fusion of art, religion, and Arequipeño history.

What is the Santa Catalina Monastery and why is it worth visiting?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is an ancient Dominican convent founded in 1579 and still inhabited by nuns today. It’s a maze of streets, courtyards, chapels, and rooms decorated with vibrant colors. Its colonial architecture, combined with religious and everyday elements, makes it a unique cultural experience. Visiting it reveals the cloistered life, religious art, and the history of one of Peru’s oldest female communities.

What is the guided tour of the Santa Catalina Monastery like in Arequipa?

The guided tour of the Santa Catalina Monastery lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours, led by a specialized guide. You’ll visit areas like the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, the Orange Tree Courtyard, the Museum of Religious Art, and cells decorated with Andean motifs. The tour explains the nuns’ lifestyle, colonial architecture, and the symbolism behind each space. It’s a calm, spiritual, and very visual experience.

What makes the architecture of the Santa Catalina Monastery unique?

The architecture of the Santa Catalina Monastery combines Spanish colonial style with Andean influences. It is built with white sillar, carob wood, and red tiles. Its most striking feature is its city-within-a-city design, with narrow streets, inner plazas, and isolated areas. Every corner has a religious or functional purpose, and the wall colors (blue, ocher, red) symbolize the spiritual states of the nuns.

What is the Colca Canyon and where is it located?

The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching over 11,000 feet (3,400 meters). It is located in southern Peru, in the Arequipa region, and is part of an Andean valley with traditional villages, Inca agricultural terraces, and volcanic landscapes. It’s famous for condor watching at Cruz del Cóndor and for its rich cultural and natural heritage.

What does a 2-day tour to the Colca Canyon include?

A 2-day Colca Canyon tour generally includes:

  • Round-trip transportation from Arequipa.
  • One night in a thermal hotel in Chivay or Yanque.

  • Hot springs.
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (depending on the package).
  • Professional guide.

It’s a complete experience that combines nature, culture, and relaxation.

Where can you see the Andean condor in the Colca Canyon?

The best place to see the Andean condor is at Cruz del Cóndor, a natural viewpoint where these majestic birds soar on air currents. The best time is early morning (between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m.), when the wind helps condors fly close to the canyon’s edge. From here, you can also appreciate the depth of the Colca River and surrounding volcanoes.

Is there trekking available in the Colca Canyon?

Yes, there are several trekking routes in the Colca Canyon, perfect for nature and hiking lovers. The most popular are:

  • Inca Trail to Colca: goes through ancient terraces and rural communities.
  • Huambo to Coporaque Trail: medium difficulty, lasts 2–3 days.
  • Condor Route: short and accessible, starting from Cabanaconde.

These hikes allow you to connect with rural culture, observe flora and fauna, and enjoy unique landscapes. Hiring local guides is recommended.

What are the Uros Islands and why do they float?

The Uros Islands are artificial islands made of totora, an aquatic plant that grows in Lake Titicaca. These islands float because the totora roots are woven together to form a flexible base that is constantly renewed. Uros families have lived here since pre-Inca times, preserving their traditions, clothing, and way of life. Today, they are a major tourist attraction in Puno.

What is a visit to the Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca like?

The visit to the Uros Islands begins with a boat ride from Puno. Upon arrival, the locals explain how they build the islands, their homes, and their boats. You can walk on the island, taste a traditional drink (like chicha), buy handicrafts, and optionally ride a totora raft. It’s an authentic and highly visual cultural experience.

  • Walk along its Andean trails with lake views.
  • Learn about handmade textile production, recognized by UNESCO.

  • Visit the ceremonial center and main viewpoint.

Taquile is an example of community-based social organization and Andean cultural pride.

Why are Taquile textiles considered a World Heritage?

Taquile textiles were declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005. They are handmade using alpaca or sheep wool and ancestral techniques. Each design has symbolic meaning: representing stories, myths, landscapes, or emotional states. Men weave on Taquile, which is an uncommon tradition in the Andean region.

What is Qenqo and what was its function during the Inca era?

Qenqo is an Inca archaeological site with a carved rock and underground tunnels. It was used for religious ceremonies, likely related to the worship of the Puma god and the elements (water, earth, sun). It has an offering altar and a channel simulating a river. It’s near Sacsayhuamán and is part of the Cusco Archaeological Circuit.

What does the name Pucapucara mean and what can you see there?

Pucapucara means “Red Fortress” in Quechua, due to the color of its volcanic stones. It was a tambo (resting place) for the Inca and his army during travels. It features stairways, viewpoints, chambers, and a surveillance system. Located on a hill overlooking Cusco and the valley, it’s ideal for sunsets. It’s less crowded than other sites, making it very peaceful.

What is Tambomachay and why is it called “Inca Baths”?

Tambomachay is an Inca site known as the “Inca Baths” for its sophisticated system of water channels and fountains.
