More Information

Experience the sensation of walking on the moon and Mars with this tour that will take you to see two classics of the Atacama Desert.

Coyote Stone Viewpoint

Shortly after leaving, in just five minutes, the landscape began to surprise us. The vast mountains were painted in ocher, red and yellow tones, while the white hue of the minerals, predominantly sodium chloride or “salt”, added to the spectacle. Clear blue skies and a few scattered clouds completed the impressive sight.

As we continued our journey, our guide enlightened us about our surroundings. We were able to capture the essence of the Atacama desert, in which we were immersed. This ancient desert has a history dating back some 3 million years and was once an underwater kingdom.

In the distance, we can see the Cordillera de la Costa, a mountain range that is lower and older than the Andes. The prominent Cerro Domeyko and several volcanoes, including the Licancabur volcano, graced the landscape. The name of this majestic volcano, which reaches almost 6,000 meters above sea level with its conical shape, has great meaning in the Atacameño or Kunza language, which means “people’s mountain”.

He was highly revered by the ancient indigenous inhabitants of the area. You can expect this imposing volcano to be a constant companion during your excursions in San Pedro de Atacama.

Death Valley

In the Valley of Death, unlike the Valley of the Moon, which we will talk about shortly, you can practice various activities, such as sandboarding, mountain biking and horse riding.

This valley owes its name to the unfortunate history of many people who lost their lives trying to cross it, which makes the sight even more awe-inspiring.

Valley of the Moon

In the surroundings, evaporites abounded, sedimentary rocks that form when salts dissolve in lakes and coastal seas and then crystallize. The reserve had clearly marked trails for tourists, with stones and signs. Our attention was drawn to a sign warning visitors not to enter the “evaporite sector” to protect these unique formations from human interference.
