More Information
More Information about the San Pedro Atacama Astronomical Tour
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) designated San Pedro de Atacama as a destination par excellence for stargazing in 2002.
This award is attributed to its exceptional weather conditions and the absence of light pollution. With 90% of the year of clear skies, little humidity and a considerable altitude, the nights in San Pedro de Atacama are truly impressive.
Nearby, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), the largest astronomical project in the world, has been operational since 2012. However, ALMA does not offer night astronomical tours, only free visits to its base station on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior registration on its website.
If you are interested in an astronomical tour, San Pedro de Atacama has several astronomical tourist centers. These centers have professional telescopes for amateurs and are run by certified astronomers.
The exhibits target people with no prior knowledge, ensuring they can appreciate the wonders of the night sky through telescopes or even with the naked eye, guided by a laser pointer.
If time permits, there are two group sessions each night, with a maximum capacity of 10-12 people. Each session lasts approximately two hours and consists of three stages.
