Our first stop will be the amazing Uros Floating Islands, located a 30-minute boat ride away and part of the Titicaca National Reserve.
You will meet the inhabitants of this ancient culture who maintain their ancestral traditions, living on islands built with reeds and dedicating themselves mainly to artisanal carachi fishing, hunting wild birds, and collecting eggs.
After approximately 40 minutes, we will continue our journey to the natural island of Taquile, world-famous for its textiles recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. What will we see on the Arequipa city tour?
The Arequipa city tour is a perfect introduction to the “White City”. We will visit:
- Carmen Alto Lookout: Panoramic views of the valley and volcanoes
- Yanahuara: Famous for its ashlar arches and the Misti volcano in the background
- Plaza de Armas: Surrounded by colonial archways and the Cathedral
- Church of the Society of Jesus: With its impressive Baroque dome
- Santa Catalina Monastery: A colonial labyrinth of streets, plazas, and painted cells
It’s a unique blend of history, architecture, and Andean energy.
Why is it called the “White City”?
Arequipa is known as the “White City” because many of its historic buildings are constructed with sillar, a white or beige volcanic stone quarried from the Chachani volcano. This stone gives the city a special glow under the sun and was key to its declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What is the Santa Catalina Monastery?
It is one of the most important monuments in Latin America. This Santa Catalina Monastery Arequipa was founded in 1579 and covers more than 20,000 m². For centuries, it was a world apart where nuns lived in isolation. Today you can walk through its painted alleyways, interior plazas, gardens, and decorated cells. It’s like stepping into a village within the city.
What is the journey from Arequipa to Colca Canyon like?
We depart early after breakfast. The journey takes about 3 hours and is completely scenic. We pass through:
- The Salinas and Aguada Blada National Reserve, where you’ll see vicuñas and flamingos
- Patapampa (4,800 meters / 15,748 ft above sea level), a lookout point for the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes
- Descent to the picturesque town of Chivay (3,600 meters / 11,811 ft), the base point for exploring the canyon
What are the Chivay hot springs?
The Chivay hot springs (like La Calera) are fed by mineral-rich medicinal waters. They are ideal for relaxing muscles after days of activity. They have outdoor pools with views of the valley. Admission is not included in the tour, but they are very much worth visiting during your free afternoon.
What is the Cruz del Cóndor in Colca Canyon?
The Cruz del Cóndor Colca is the canyon’s most famous lookout point. From here, you can see how Andean condors soar over the abyss, riding the air currents. Some have a wingspan of up to 3 meters (10 feet). It is an impressive natural spectacle, especially early in the morning when the condors leave to search for food.
What is the best time to visit Colca Canyon?
The best time Colca Canyon is the dry season, from May to October. During these months there are fewer clouds, better visibility, and ideal conditions for seeing the condors. Furthermore, the sky is clear and photos turn out perfectly. Avoid January and February if you can, as they are the rainiest months.
What is the altitude of Colca Canyon?
The canyon has points between 3,600 and 4,800 meters (11,811 – 15,748 ft) above sea level. This is why we recommend acclimatizing beforehand. The descent to the bottom of the canyon (4,160 m / 13,648 ft) is one of the deepest in the world. If you feel dizzy, the guide will carry portable oxygen and an emergency kit.
Can you see the condors flying every day?
Yes, condor flights in Colca happen almost every day, especially between 6:30 and 9:00 a.m., when the thermal currents allow them to rise. They aren’t always close by, but with patience and a bit of luck, you will be able to see several soaring majestically. The guide will explain their habits and cultural significance.
What towns do we visit in the Colca Valley?
After the Cruz del Cóndor, we travel through four traditional towns:
- Pinchollo: With adobe houses and typical textiles
- Maca: Famous for its well-preserved colonial church
- Achoma: With panoramic views of the valley
- Yanque: Known for its embroidery and folk dances
We make stops in each one for photos, culture, and crafts.
What are the colcas and litomaquetas?
Colcas were Inca storehouses used to keep food like corn and potatoes. Many can still be seen on the canyon slopes. Litomaquetas are pre-Inca tombs carved into the rock. They are part of the valley’s archaeological legacy and you will see them at lookout points like Antahuilque and Choquetico.
What is the transfer from Colca to Puno like?
It is a journey of approximately 6 hours by private transportation. We pass through varied landscapes: stone forests, high-Andean lagoons, grasslands, and small towns like Imata and Santa Lucía. We arrive in Puno around 7:30 p.m. It’s a long trip, but full of natural beauty.
What will we see on Lake Titicaca?
Lake Titicaca Puno is the world’s highest navigable lake (3,810 meters / 12,500 ft above sea level). There we will visit:
- Floating Islands of the Uros: Communities that live on islands made of totora reeds
- Taquile Island: Famous for its unique textiles and traditional dances
Both offer a deep connection with Andean culture and unforgettable landscapes.
Who are the Uros and how do they live?
The Uros are an ancestral ethnic group who live on floating islands made of totora reeds, an aquatic plant. Their houses, furniture, and boats are also made of totora. They are dedicated to fishing, bird hunting, and tourism. They speak Spanish and their native language. Respecting their customs is essential during your visit.
Why are the textiles from Taquile so special?
The Taquile Puno textiles are recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The most curious fact: men knit from the age of 8, while women spin the yarn. They use ancestral techniques, natural dyes, and designs that tell stories. Each garment can take weeks to make. Ideal for bringing home a unique souvenir.
What will we eat during the tour?
We offer typical meals from each region:
- In Arequipa: rocoto relleno (stuffed spicy pepper), chupe de camarones (shrimp chowder), adobo (marinated pork stew)
- In Colca: lamb stew, quinoa, fried trout
- In Puno: caldo de cabeza de oveja (sheep head soup), piti (a meat and bean stew), quinoa with cheese
All ingredients are local and fresh. If you are vegetarian or have allergies, please let us know in advance.
Where will we sleep during the tour?
You will sleep in comfortable and safe hotels:
- Night 1: Hotel in Arequipa
- Night 2: Hotel in Chivay (Colca)
- Night 3 and 4: Hotel in Puno
All have private bathrooms, hot water, and basic Wi-Fi. They are selected for their location, cleanliness, and quality.
Is there electricity and cell phone service?
Yes, all hotels have electricity to charge your devices. Cell phone service is good in Arequipa and Puno, but can be weak in rural areas like Colca. We recommend disconnecting a bit. However, the guide will have emergency communication at all times.
What clothes should I pack for the Arequipa Puno tour?
ou need functional, layered clothing:
- Thermal base layers (it’s cold at high altitude)
- Waterproof jacket (it can rain)
- Comfortable pants
- Sneakers or light hiking shoes
- Hat, gloves, and sunscreen
Also bring repellent, a power bank, and a small daypack.
What happens if I get sick or can’t continue?
Our guides carry a basic first-aid kit, portable oxygen, and an emergency radio. If someone gets altitude sickness or is injured, we activate the rescue plan: fast transport to Arequipa or Juliaca. Everyone must have travel insurance. Most people complete the tour without any problems, but we are prepared.
What’s the difference between this tour and going alone?
Going with an agency guarantees safety, logistics, certified guides, entrance tickets, and comfort. If you go alone, you must organize transportation, schedules, language barriers, and altitude risks. Furthermore, many areas require permits. With Dreamy Tours, you just enjoy.
What other places can I visit nearby?
You can extend your trip to:
- Misti Volcano Arequipa (for advanced trekking)
- Sillar Route (the ashlar route in Arequipa)
- Cotacotani Lagoon (near Puno)
We can help you organize extensions based on your time.
Does the tour include the city tour in Arequipa?
Yes, we include the Arequipa city tour as part of the package. We visit the most iconic spots: Plaza de Armas, Yanahuara, Santa Catalina, and more. It’s an excellent way to learn about the city’s history and architecture.
What documents do I need for the tour?
You only need your original passport and your booking confirmation. If you are a student, bring your international ISIC card for a possible discount. Everything must match your name. Photos or foreign ID cards are not accepted.
Can I do the tour as a group or private tour?
Yes, we offer both group tour Arequipa Puno and private tours. The group tour is economical and social. The private tour offers total flexibility: schedules, pace, and personalization. It’s ideal for families, couples, or those seeking greater comfort.
