however, it can be said\nthat he began his pictorial work around 1627, the date from which his first\ncanvas dates and that it probably belonged to the indigenous nobility. Also\nthat in 1667 he signed a painting indicating that he was 56 years old and according\nto tradition, his house and workshop are located in the town of San Sebasti\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acoording to <strong>biography\nof Diego Quispe Tito,<\/strong> he established himself as a highly prestigious artist\nin the city of Cusco from the 1660s on, by intensifying his production for the\ntemple of San Sebasti\u00e1n. It is from the virtuosity that he shows in the\npainting cycles that he produces for this temple that he gains the favor of the\nmost important painting commissioners in Cuzco and Upper Peru, where he\nregularly sent paintings. In a painting that he sends to Potos\u00ed in 1667 he\nsigned &#8220;Quispi Tito inga inbentado from the year D-1667, age 56&#8221;, 1 a\nway to highlight the creative and cultured aspect of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a follower of Gregorio Gamarra, who in turn was a\ndisciple of Father Bernardo Bitti. His painting had two stages. In the first,\nhis painting was characterized by having certain remnants of Mannerism, while\nin the second, the influence of Flemish engravings can be seen in his painting.\nHowever, he is a painter who is somewhat outside the prevailing style in the\ncity of Cuzco and who ends up developing and imposing a new style on painting\nin the region. He implants the use of large landscapes full of flowers and\nanimals that later become characteristic of Cuzque\u00f1a Painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-art-of-diego-quispe-tito\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Art_of_Diego_Quispe_Tito\"><\/span><strong>Art of Diego Quispe\nTito <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary testimonies regarding <strong>art of Diego Quispe Tito <\/strong>are scarce but it can be said that his\npictorial work began around 1627, the date from which his first canvas dates.\nHe was a follower of Gregorio Gamarra, who in turn was a disciple of Father\nBernardo Bitti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>paintings of Diego\nQuispe Tito <\/strong>had two stages. His style, of Mannerist\ninspiration, was consolidated from the contemplation of engravings and tables\nby Flemish artists, such as Antonio Wierix or Ferdinand Bol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Vision of the cross (1631) and the Ascension (1634),\ntwo of his first works, the linear schematization and the taste for the\ndecorative elements characteristic of the mature works of this author of\nindigenous origin can already be seen. Native plants, flowers and birds are\nmixed with architectures drawn from European prints. This, together with a special\nattention to detail and the anecdotal, gave rise to a school that had a great\nimpact on the Andean pictorial tradition. The Return from Egypt and the Last\nJudgment are characteristic themes of <strong>art\nof Diego Quispe Tito<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the church of San Sebasti\u00e1n (Cuzco) a series of canvases\non the life of Saint John the Baptist are preserved, made around 1663 based on\nthe engravings of Cornellis and Phillipe Galle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diego Quispe Tito<\/strong>&#8216;smasterpiece of <strong>art<\/strong> is the Zodiac, scenes from parables and the life of Christ that\ncan be seen today in the Archbishop&#8217;s Palace in Cuzco (1681). It is a series of\npaintings intended to combat idolatry in which each sign corresponds to a\nbiblical parable. This Zodiac series is currently made up of nine canvases,\neach one corresponding to a zodiac sign with a parable of the life of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-paintings-of-diego-quispe-tito\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paintings_of_Diego_Quispe_Tito\"><\/span><strong>Paintings of Diego\nQuispe Tito <\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Diego Quispe Tito was one of the best Indian painters of the\nCusco school:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019He was the most important Cuzco painter of the s. XVII,\nwhich starting from Mannerism (see MANNERISM I B) came to create a local style\nthat was characteristic of what was later called the &#8220;Cuzco school of\npainting&#8221;. (GER Encyclopedia 2010)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His originality was what made <strong>paintings of Diego Quispe Tito <\/strong>so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the characteristics of <strong>paintings of Diego Quispe Tito<\/strong>, which began to be used more\nfrequently since then, are the freedom in managing perspectives and the\nabundance of birds in leafy trees. The use of these animals, especially jungle\nparrots, is interpreted by some researchers as a secret sign that would\nrepresent the Inca nobility or the Andean resistance. The most valuable works\nof this Indian painter are in the church of his hometown: San Sebasti\u00e1n.
