These discomforts usually begin <strong>6 to 10 hours<\/strong> after arriving at high altitude and typically go away once your body acclimates to the new conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s essential to take precautions to avoid complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Can_Be_Affected\"><\/span>Who Can Be Affected?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anyone<\/strong> can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of their physical condition. Even high-performance athletes can experience symptoms. Stay Well Hydrated<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some experts recommend drinking <strong>3 to 4 liters of water per day<\/strong>. The golden rule is to <strong>drink before you feel thirsty<\/strong>, as dehydration can worsen altitude sickness symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Avoid_Intense_Physical_Activity\"><\/span>4. Avoid Intense Physical Activity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not fully acclimated, avoid strenuous activities. If you feel short of breath or experience a sudden increase in heart rate during a hike, <strong>stop and breathe deeply<\/strong> until you recover. Drink Coca Tea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This traditional Andean herbal tea is widely used to <strong>combat altitude sickness<\/strong>. Avoid drinking it late in the day, as it has <strong>a mild stimulant effect<\/strong> and may interfere with sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Chew_Coca_Leaves\"><\/span>6. Chew Coca Leaves<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find coca leaves in local markets or supermarkets in the highlands. <strong>Chew the leaves and keep them in your cheek<\/strong> until they stop releasing their <strong>bitter juice<\/strong> (which may taste unpleasant but is effective). Despite the flavor, the effects are <strong>noticeable within minutes<\/strong>, easing dizziness and shortness of breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also try <strong>coca candies<\/strong>, which are often sweetened to mask the taste.
