It has three summits, the tallest reaching&nbsp;<strong>6,768 meters (22,205 ft)<\/strong>. Huascar\u00e1n is the&nbsp;<strong>fifth-highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere<\/strong>, after Aconcagua, Ojos del Salado, Pissis, and Mercedario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The massif occupies the central-northern part of the Cordillera Blanca and is separated from the rest of the range by two deep valleys: the&nbsp;<strong>Quebrada de Llanganuco<\/strong>&nbsp;to the north and the&nbsp;<strong>Quebrada de Ulta<\/strong>&nbsp;to the south. At&nbsp;<strong>6,617 meters (21,709 ft)<\/strong>, it\u2019s the&nbsp;<strong>second-highest peak in Peru<\/strong>&nbsp;and part of the&nbsp;<strong>Cordillera Huayhuash<\/strong>, considered the most spectacular mountain range in the Peruvian Andes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yerupaj\u00e1 is one of the&nbsp;<strong>most challenging snow-capped peaks to climb<\/strong>, earning it global fame for its imposing summits and steep ridges. Coropuna<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<strong>volcanic snow peak<\/strong>&nbsp;stands at&nbsp;<strong>6,405 meters (21,014 ft)<\/strong>&nbsp;and is located in the&nbsp;<strong>Cordillera Ampato<\/strong>, between the Castilla and Condesuyos provinces in Arequipa. The first ascent was made by American explorer&nbsp;<strong>Hiram Bingham<\/strong>&nbsp;and Yale University researchers in&nbsp;<strong>1911<\/strong>, where they discovered traces of Inca clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This massive&nbsp;<strong>ice-covered stratovolcano<\/strong>&nbsp;features a&nbsp;<strong>12 x 20 km plateau<\/strong>&nbsp;at its summit, with six cones rising from it. Huandoy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This snow-capped peak is located in&nbsp;<strong>Yungay Province, Ancash<\/strong>, just north of Huascar\u00e1n, with an elevation of&nbsp;<strong>6,395 meters (20,981 ft)<\/strong>. A local legend says Huandoy and Huascar\u00e1n were once a&nbsp;<strong>princess and a soldier<\/strong>, turned into mountains by the god Huaylas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huandoy has&nbsp;<strong>four summits<\/strong>, each facing a cardinal direction.
