This route contains two well-defined zones: <strong>El Abra (4,297 m) <\/strong>and the <strong>lower zone (Carrizales at 3,245 m) <\/strong>. The birds you\u2019ll see here are rare and highly sought after by birdwatchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dominant ecosystem is <strong>tropical montane forest <\/strong>or <strong>cloud forest <\/strong>in the Carrizales area, with lowland forests covered in epiphytic plants and some bamboo patches. Chapman and George K. Cherrie (July 1\u201324, 1916), and later Harry L. Watkins (April 3\u201325, 1917), was conducted by the Machu Picchu Geographical Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between September 1974, June 1976, 1977, October 1978, and August 1979, staff from the Museum of Zoology at Louisiana State University (LSU) visited the valley to conduct inventories and expand knowledge on birds and small mammals. Three main camps were set up along the Ollantaytambo\u2013Quillabamba road across Abra M\u00e1laga (3,900 m), and a fourth was located in Kiteni (450 m), beyond Quillabamba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Birdwatching_and_Biodiversity_at_Abra_Malaga_Pass\"><\/span>Birdwatching and Biodiversity at Abra M\u00e1laga Pass<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From Ollantaytambo, the first stop is <strong>Las Pe\u00f1as <\/strong>, located about 15 km from the town. It\u2019s named for the remains of Inca stone structures found there. Around the area, among bushes and along the roadside, you can spot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-list\"><ul class=\"advgblist-e758dcd0-4714-4b94-a5c0-258b225a028b advgb-list advgb-list-info\">\n<li>Cuzco Brushfinch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mountain Velvetbreast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tyrian Metaltail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shining Sunbeam<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White-tufted Sunbird<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Puna Tapaculo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White-browed Hemispingus<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Abra M\u00e1laga Pass is the highest point on the route and offers the safest and most accessible birding area. To explore it, follow the trail starting at the checkpoint located at the top of the pass. Most accommodations are comfortable but small, and often don\u2019t include parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach Abra M\u00e1laga, take the road toward Quillabamba by private car or taxi. Public transportation runs on fixed morning schedules. There is no cell phone signal along the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Climate_at_Abra_Malaga_Peru\"><\/span>Climate at Abra M\u00e1laga, Peru<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The climate is rainy from <strong>November to April <\/strong>, and mild with occasional rain from <strong>May to October <\/strong>. However, if you plan to access the <strong>Santa Teresa route <\/strong>, you must pay an entrance fee, which differs for locals and foreigners.
