It is located at 3,635 meters above sea level, on the western slopes of the Andes mountain range, high above the Colca Canyon. It served as a \u201creducci\u00f3n\u201d \u2014 a system used by the Spanish to relocate indigenous populations into centralized settlements in order to control and convert them to Christianity. The traditional chessboard layout used by the Spanish can still be seen today: the main church faces the town council (now the municipal building), with the founding families&#8217; homes surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Altitude_of_Chivay\"><\/span>Altitude of Chivay<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chivay is a city in Peru and serves as the capital of the province of Caylloma. Its altitude is 3,635 meters (11,926 feet) above sea level, located on the western slopes of the Andes, high above the Colca Canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Time_to_Visit_Chivay_Peru\"><\/span>Best Time to Visit Chivay, Peru<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Chivay, summers are short, cold, arid, and mostly cloudy, while winters are also short, very cold, dry, and mostly sunny. Throughout the year, temperatures generally range from -1\u00b0C (30\u00b0F) to 17\u00b0C (63\u00b0F) and rarely drop below -2\u00b0C (28\u00b0F) or rise above 20\u00b0C (68\u00b0F).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to tourism ratings, the best times of year to visit Chivay for pleasant weather are from late April to late May and from late July to mid-December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tourism_in_Chivay_Peru\"><\/span>Tourism in Chivay, Peru<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thermal_Baths_of_Chivay\"><\/span>Thermal Baths of Chivay<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chivay hot springs, locally known as <em>&#8220;La Calera&#8221; <\/em>, are located at 3,633 meters (11,919 feet) above sea level, just 3 km from the town of Chivay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thermal baths of Chivay consist of five specially built heated pools filled with naturally hot water sourced from the Cotallahuillca volcano. Initially, the water temperature ranges between 80\u00b0C and 85\u00b0C (176\u00b0F\u2013185\u00b0F), but it cools down along its path, reaching the complex at around 38\u00b0C (100\u00b0F) \u2014 ideal for therapeutic baths. These waters have healing properties for various ailments, especially rheumatism and other muscle and skin conditions. They contain 30% calcium, 19% zinc, and 18% iron \u2014 minerals that can be absorbed through the skin and help relieve muscular and joint pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Colca_Natural_Archaeology_Museum\"><\/span>Colca Natural Archaeology Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A museum offering insights into the archaeological and natural heritage of the Colca Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Inca_Bridge\"><\/span>Inca Bridge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A stone bridge built by the local population during the Tahuantinsuyo era.
