7 km from the city of Cusco<\/strong><\/a>, is the fortified hill of Puca Pucara in Per\u00fa<\/strong>. Getting here is quite easy since it is part of a tourist circuit that covers Sacsayhuaman<\/strong><\/a>, Qenqo<\/strong><\/a>, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puca Pucara means “red fortress”, because the\ncalcareous stones with which it is built have acquired the reddish coloration\nof the land, very abundant in iron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is alleged that it had the function of protecting Tambomachay, an important palace in the Incario. But that in turn, due to its architectural layout and the existence of fountains, aqueducts and multiple enclosures, and its proximity to the old road, which is observed gaining the gap in the northern mountain and leading to Huchuy Qosqo and Calca in the Sacred Valley<\/a><\/strong> It was a “tambo” that is to say, a collective shelter that offered inn and food to travelers, as well as to the procession that had to accompany the Inca in his retirement in Tambomachay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Puca Pucara Per\u00fa<\/strong>\nthere are enclosures, interior squares, bathrooms, aqueducts, watchtowers and\nan easily recognizable Inca trail. The buildings are made of medium and small\nstones, the external surface of the polyhedra is slightly rough unlike other\narchaeological sites, in synthesis the urban layout is highly adequate and\nfunctional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
