Heptapleurum (Schefflera) arboricola 'Gerda'

Heptapleurum (Schefflera) arboricola 'Gerda' has glossy palmate leaves made up of oval green leaflets splashed with yellow. Mature leaves often carry around eight leaflets, giving each leaf a clear umbrella-like shape on long, slender stalks.

'Gerda' grows as a compact, tender evergreen shrub with woody stems and repeated tiers of foliage. The yellow pattern varies naturally from leaf to leaf, so some new growth looks brighter while other leaves show more green. Regular pruning helps the plant hold a dense shape as the stems lengthen.

Yellow-splashed leaves and compact shrub growth

  • Leaf pattern: Oval green leaflets splashed with yellow across palmately arranged leaves.
  • Leaf count: Mature leaves commonly carry around eight leaflets on long stalks.
  • Growth habit: Tender evergreen shrub with woody stems and a compact indoor frame.
  • Leaf texture: Leathery, glossy foliage on firm petioles when light and watering are stable.
  • Branching response: Trimming above a node helps the plant build a denser shape over time.

How 'Gerda' builds fuller stems in a pot

Heptapleurum arboricola comes from Hainan and Taiwan, where it grows in wet tropical forest conditions as a scrambling shrub. In its native range it is associated with moist forest habitats and stream-bank conditions, so indoor care should aim for steady moisture with drainage rather than dry, compacted soil.

As new stems extend, the leaves appear in stacked clusters. Low light makes the gaps between those clusters longer, while brighter filtered light helps keep the stem growth firmer. A light trim above a node redirects growth into side shoots and keeps the variegated foliage closer to the plant’s main frame.

Care for yellow-splashed Heptapleurum arboricola

  • Light: Give bright indirect light or gentle filtered sun. This keeps the stems firmer and helps the yellow-splashed leaves develop without scorch.
  • Watering: Let the upper 25–35% of the substrate dry before watering again. Water fully, then empty any excess from the outer pot or saucer.
  • Substrate: Use an airy, well-drained mix with bark, composted material and mineral particles. The roots need moisture, but dense soil makes root problems more likely.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 18–26 °C. Protect from cold windows, cold floors and sudden temperature drops.
  • Humidity: Average humidity works for most established plants. Higher humidity with airflow can help fresh leaflets expand evenly.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength during active growth. Do not feed heavily when the plant is resting in lower light.
  • Pruning: Trim just above a leaf node when stems start to open up. This encourages side shoots and keeps the yellow-splashed leaf clusters closer together.
  • Repotting: Repot once roots fill the container or watering becomes difficult to manage. A pot only slightly larger than the root ball is easiest to water correctly.
  • Mineral substrates: Established Heptapleurum arboricola can adapt to mineral or semi-hydro substrates when the transition is gradual and oxygen around the roots stays high.

Yellowing leaves, crisp edges and pest signs

  • Lower leaves yellowing: Check whether the potting mix is staying wet at the bottom. Improve drainage and reduce watering frequency if needed.
  • Crisp leaf edges: Look for missed watering, hot sun through glass or very dry airflow near the plant.
  • Leaf drop after purchase: Heptapleurum often reacts to changes in light and transport. Keep care steady and avoid repotting immediately unless the substrate is failing.
  • Pests in dense stems: Check for mealybugs, scale insects and spider mites around petioles, leaf undersides and stem joints.
  • Uneven variegation: Mixed yellow and green patterning is normal. Inspect only if a whole stem becomes weak, damaged or unusually pale.

Pet safety and pruning hygiene

Heptapleurum arboricola 'Gerda' is not pet-safe. Chewed leaves can irritate the mouth and throat, and sap may irritate sensitive skin. Keep the plant away from pets and small children, and wash hands after pruning or removing damaged stems.

Botanical name and species epithet

Heptapleurum arboricola belongs to Araliaceae and is also widely known as Schefflera arboricola. The species name arboricola means “dwelling in or on trees”, referring to a tropical scrambling shrub that can grow among other woody vegetation.

Heptapleurum (Schefflera) arboricola 'Gerda' grows as a compact umbrella shrub with glossy yellow-splashed leaflets and a pruning-friendly woody frame.

Husky approved!
Color: Cheers
Got this for my large husky to wear for his 10th birthday. He didn't tear it up right away. The squeaker lasted longer than it does with most toys. He seemed to genuinely enjoy the toy. Removed the stretchy string once I got a few pictures so he wouldn't eat it. Very cute.

5 Stars - My Gentle Giant Loves It!
Color: Pawty, Color: Pawty
I got this toy for my German Shepherd, who is very gentle and loves soft plush toys. Even though he’s a big dog, he’s careful and enjoys playing gentle tug-of-war so the rope part as the string is perfect. The toy was a little smaller in length than I expected, but it hasn’t mattered at all — he absolutely loves it! It’s soft, thick, and has a squeaker deep inside that will make it hard for a dog to pull out. It is cute, and has held up well to a lot of carrying around and light tugging. If you have a gentle dog who loves plush toys, I definitely recommend this one. I would absolutely purchase it again! Fun little dog birthday gift.

Stupid cute!
Color: Crown, Color: Crown
My Lily looked so cute on her first birthday and it was so easy to put on. It doubles as a toy if you want to cut the band off. It's got a crinkling sound, no squeaker

Not for tough dogs who chew
Color: Pawty
My dog loves it! We play tug of war and it’s still holding up. She is 40 pounds and is strong. But this would not be durable for dogs who rip things apart.
