Liatris pycnostachya, also known as prairie blazing star, might just be the tallest of the Liatris family that you can cultivate, typically reaching impressive heights of 2 to 4 feet and sometimes even stretching up to 5 feet! This lovely clump-forming perennial hails from Texas, where it naturally graces prairies, open woods, meadows, and even those charming spots along railroad tracks and roads. Its delightful, rounded flower heads bloom in a deep rose-purple shade, each measuring around 3/4 inch across, and they’re packed together into terminal spikes that can soar up to 20 inches long atop sturdy, leafy flower stalks. The stalks rise from beautiful tufts of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that can grow as long as 12 inches.
As summer arrives, the flowers unfurl from top to bottom on the spikes, creating a vibrant display that attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and a host of other pollinators, while songbirds happily feast on the tiny seeds. It thrives in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils and just loves soaking up full sun. Plus, it's quite a resilient plant, enduring poor soils, drought, summer heat, and humidity, but it does prefer to avoid wet winter soils.
